Biography
A Brief History of the Spirited Lady
Location, Past, and Present LOCATION AND LAYOUT The Spirited Lady Circus sits as close to the base of the Pillar as it reasonably can, and has since anyone can remember - the Colonnades simply built around it. Generations' worth of tents, huts, caravans, and any form of mobile transportation you could think of sits in a patchwork ring around the Circus' main attraction: the Big Top. While this tent is usually separated by canvas walls to allow multiple performances at once, on a few special occasions, the walls may be lifted to allow for a stage so spectacularly large that anything - from deathly acrobatics, to rare animal acts, to fifty-dragon aerial arts - seems possible. The circles of tents and caravans serve two purposes - to entertain guests as they approach the Big Top, and to house performers. Traditionally, performers construct (or these days, purchase) their mobile housing, specially tailored to fit their talents. For example, aerial-silk enthusiasts pitch sturdy high ceilinged tents that can support their weight, with audience seating encircling the base. Magicians may install permanent floor traps and mirrors. Clowns ensure that their floors can handle the weight of a several-ton dragon crashing on it day after day. As the name implies, these mobile homes also include some form of private residence for the performers. When not called upon to perform in the Big Top, performers can be found in this veritable fortress of talents. PAST Little is certain of the circus' past. Thanks to the meticulous work of generations of librarians (such as Bafford), many old documents regarding the circus have been preserved in the Spirited Lady's library - a caravan with a size-enhanced interior where scrolls are piled to the ceilings regardless. Some claim that the circus was founded in tribute to the Earthshaker, though many scholars hotly contest this. As this version of events goes, the early children of the Earthshaker noticed their father's eternal sadness, and decided to dedicate their lives to making him smile once again. Whether or not this feat was achieved is uncertain - and academics would almost certainly agree that it's a preposterous story to begin with. Yet, there do still exist dragons who claim this as fact... Traditionally, the circus had been a traveling one, with performers following entertainment circuits all across Sornieth to bring joy to the masses. The Pillar served as a more permanent home, where they would circle back to during their off-seasons. While the circus performed year-round, performers kept their own schedules, swapping out with others to return home and rest after months of arduous travel. This also ensured that their homebase at the Pillar was never left fully unattended. PRESENT No longer does the circus wander. With the Colonnades exploding in popularity, the Spirited Lady remains grounded for the foreseeable future, eager to build new traditions with Dragonhome's newest residents. |
