Where am I? The words echoed in the silence that surrounded her. Everything was black, there was neither light nor sound. Just thick, heavy, dark nothingness. What happened? As an answer, images started flooding her consciousness. Images of the sea, cold and unforgiving. Waves breaking on a rough cliff, foam forming on them like on the chaps of a predator. And a voice, faint at first, but growing louder and louder… The sun was about to hit the horizon. Someone had lit torches alongside the path leading up to the highest point of the cliff from where one could overlook the endless see. Countless times had Kuriltarnum come here with her friends to watch the waves. Today would be the last time she'd see the ocean. The clan's chief was speaking to the crowd patiently waiting. His words went past her mind. They were meaningless. The crowd was silent aside from low sobbing from somewhere off to the side. Kuriltarnum kept her gaze lowered. She didn't want to see her mother cry. They had cried together as soon as the village's council had announced their decision. By now, Kuriltarnum felt dried out. There was no way to change any of this. The old god was not pleased with them anymore, so a sacrifice was needed to soothe him: her life. Finally, the chief's speech came to an end. The crowd stayed behind, only her, the chief, a priest, and two guards made up their way to the cliff. When they arrived at the top, the priest shortly put a claw on her shoulder, squeezing it tightly. She saw sorrow and regret in his eyes. “You are saving your village, Kuri. Thank you”, he whispered. Something inside of her screamed that this was not her choice, that she would rather live on than being an offering to an old god no one had ever seen. But she remained silent. Instead, she stepped up to the cliff, looking down into the deep, dark, cold sea… Everything else was blurred. She remembered a fall, an impact. Then nothing but pain and darkness. Am I… dead? Cold crept into her limbs, her breathing stumbled. It was very likely, wasn’t it? She had been an offering, she had fallen… but if she was dead, why could she hear her heartbeat in her ears? Why was she still breathing? As though her body had waited for this realization, sensations started flooding her mind. The first one was pain. It was everywhere, in her wings, her arms, her legs. She could not help but wince, a low whimper escaping her lungs. “...move...” Kuriltarnum gasped for air. Her eyes flew open, blinking into bright light that stung in her head. The world was blurry and blinding. “... not move…” The voice was faint but slowly, Kuriltarnum was able to grasp the words. She turned her head slightly into the direction the voice was coming from, her vision still shrouded. A Ridgeback came into her view, a female with round horns and skeleton markings on her face. She looked at Kuriltarnum, her expression unreadable. “Do not move. You are wounded, but you are safe here. I will make sure you live.” Kuriltarnum did not manage more than a weak nod before unconsciousness claimed her again.
