The Cursed Seal

A Melody Echoes...

Dreamers, dreamers, those that seek
Find the singing ghosts who weep

A melody echoes through the Runic Mountain Range, a sound so faint it seems not to exist at all. Most of the time, it isn’t noticed, drowned out by the daily activities of those who dwell in the place and forced to take a backseat to the spectacular explosions that occur. Yet, it is always there, albeit suppressed. Always quietly echoing, like a memory one can never shake, like a past that can never truly be hidden away.

Echo, echo, cursed lullaby
Those who sing it are doomed to die

But deep into the night, when even troublemakers must sleep, it reverberates through the airways that riddle the very walls of a dragon clan’s lair. A mournful song, so cold even the iciest dragons feel discomfort, so darkly whispered even the most twisted beings feel some sense of unease. Not many have the gall to explore the tunnels it flows through, and those who do never dare venture too deeply in. For those airways form a maze - one so warped space has no meaning, so still time does not seem to exist.

Twisted tunnels, forgotten maze
What stood here once, the spirit beast razed

In the outer reaches of the maze are relics - whether from a terrible war or a once-great kingdom, nobody knows. Beyond those reaches are the bodies of the unfortunate trapped within the maze’s contorted walls, old and new, dead and dying. And even farther in, in a place no soul can hope to live to see, in a darkness so dark night loses all meaning, is the seal.

Dreamers, dreamers, those that seek
Don’t wake the vengeful ghosts who sleep.

~ In the distant past, there once lived a multitude of kingdoms embroiled in eternal war. The age was a harsh and bloody one, and those conditions made it so that the most powerful mages history had ever seen rise from the bloodied ashes. Between those mages, the tide of battle flowed and ebbed, and kingdoms sought their alliance.

It so happened that there lived then an enterprising mage who dabbled in the magic of spirits of souls, the undead and the dead. Secretive and infamous, the spirit mage’s skills were sought by all the kingdoms, and offers of gold and extreme glory were presented for the sake of a potential alliance. But the mage, despite dabbling in shady arts, was not interested in fame or honor - only research - and all those offers were declined.

Most kingdoms gave up, but one ruler refused to take no for an answer. If the mage wouldn’t help him, well, he’d help himself. In a completely unprecedented act of deceit, he used the spirit mage’s family as hostage and forced the mage to hand over the secret to the most powerful spiritual spell. Then, he had the spirit mage, as well as the entire family, slaughtered.

The spell in his claws, the ruler demanded all the other kingdoms bow down to him, or he would cast the spell. All knew that the spirit mage’s most powerful work of magic was the control of fallen souls. If the ruler cast the spell, the battlefield would be completely overturned, for though the living may number many, it could never outnumber the dead.

But not a single kingdom gave in, though one particular kingdom known for living on floating islands decided this would be an excellent time to sail away. Enraged by their responses and overconfident in his own abilities, the ruler ordered all his royal mages to support him, and from the very top of his castle, cast the dreaded spell.

And the world ended.

Later, it would be agreed that the ruler should’ve expected to be backstabbed by the spirit mage, for the spell he had received was anything but the mage’s most powerful. Instead of granting him the ability to control fallen souls, the spell made him the most appetizing flesh vessel for all the spirits that had fallen in the endless war. The summoned souls flooded the ruler’s body, blasting him apart from the inside with such force, the entire kingdom and several others were completely annihilated.

But that wasn’t the end of it. Forced into one point, the souls condensed and formed a sentient being that continued the path of destruction, growing stronger with every soul it consumed. What kingdoms had survived the initial blast were laid to waste by this being, and the remaining mages that had once been rivals found alliance with each other in hopes that they could stop the spirit beast.

It was a mage from the kingdom of floating islands that came up with an idea: the spell of contradiction. It was true that nobody could stop the spirit beast’s rampage, but if they could trap it in a place where nothing it desired could ever come true, then that wouldn’t matter. A twisted arrangement of tunnels and pathways was hastily created upon one of the floating islands, layered in conflicting wards and spells.

They called it the Drowste Maze.

With a song that attracted souls, the spirit beast was lured into the maze, and the mages came together and placed one final seal on it: the seal of contradiction. In the range of this spell, what was up became down, what was desired was lost, and what was false held true. By twisting the perception of everything within the maze, the mages were able to keep the spirit beast contained in the seal.

But the seal had a flaw: because of many contrasting spells used, it was liable to collapse due to the conflicting energies. To fix this, magic itself had to be fooled, and a clever Arcanite suggested hypnotism. Using a lullaby that the spirit mage had left behind, the Arcanite was able to trick a law of magic and alter the memories of every mage who knew that law. For if every mage believed the same thing, it would become the truth, and the law of magic would never realize it had been altered.

As long as nobody realized the truth, the seal would hold, and last forever.

But should the deceit be undone through some accident, then the seal would slowly unravel. One by one, the forgotten would be made aware. Awareness would lead to doubt. Doubt, to faith. Faith, to truth.

A melody is whispered in a hidden maze, carried only by the faintest movement of air. Eons have passed since it was used to hypnotize magic itself, and it now echoes, sung by the ghosts of those who died that day as an empty reminder of what had once been. The seal stands among those echoes, an exquisite statue that serves as the center of the many spells layered upon the region, and the only object keeping the spirit beast at bay. In the present, the knowledge of what had happened, though not the truth, has only been passed down to a single dragon who remembers it.

Remember, but not remember, for her memory has been stolen by a twist of fate. Dragon and knowledge wander in separate bodies within a clan that had taken up residence so close to the empty maze. One day, should they meet, they will become one again, and the dragon will finally recover her memories. But should she realize the truth along with them…

Awareness would lead to doubt. Doubt, to faith.

Faith, to truth.

And then, there would be no more need for contradictions.

Dreamers, dreamers, those that seek
Remember to not remember, the spirit beast.
