A Tale of Memories Shared

I race through the halls of the tavern, swooping up the stairs to slip into my room. I almost catch my wing on the door as I close it behind me, praying to the Eleven that nobody saw me enter the room. I slip under the covers of my bed, closing my eyes, and I try my best not to smile as I hear the crashing below. Either one of the Ridgebacks managed to poke someone in the eye again, or she knew. I hope for the latter. We don’t need to lose more of our pay because some of the crew can’t stop poking their snoots where they don’t belong. I hear the clattering stop, and the sound of a body flying up the stairs follows the silence. I’m holding back laughter as I sense her frustration. Oh yes, she knew. I hope she doesn’t find the vinegar in my luggage. That would be a dead giveaway for sure. I sense the rage fade along with the noises around me, and for a moment, I’m sure I’ve gotten away with my little prank. Surely a little shot of vinegar in the captains’ drinks would be seen as a harmless prank. I wouldn’t be in trouble for that, right?

I hear a knock on the door. It echoes like the toll of a bell, and I have to fight the urge to flee. She’s here, and she’s hidden her emotions well. I keep my eyes closed, pretending to be asleep as I hear the door creak open. I can hear her scales whispering against the wood of the floor beneath us, and I swear I can feel her eyes locked on me. I expect her to look through my stuff, to find the vinegar bottle. I expect a lecture on respecting other captains, a lecture I’ll certainly keep in mind with my next joke.

I don’t expect the sudden weight beside me. I don’t look over, but I can sense something strange about her. It takes me a minute to realize she’s feeling a sense of nostalgia. Nostalgia, and remorse. Finally, I look over at my captain, confused. Why this? Surely a simple prank wouldn’t cause so much grief, right?

“Captain Kalfu? Are you alright?” I see those spinning whirlpools slow to a standstill, the water hovering around her eyes like little stars. Fitting, actually, with her starry wings. I know the other crews have begun to relax again, and I can hear their laughter two floors down. The sway of the tavern, however, seems to have stopped at the door, leaving the Captain and I in silence. It is like two different worlds, with a border so thin one could fall into the other, yet so solid none could question where one ended and the other began. I wonder if those hovering droplets are truly her new eyes, or tears. I don’t ask her to clarify.

She is silent for a moment, collecting herself. I expect her to lie to me and say she is perfectly fine. I expect her to tell me to apologize to the other captains, or to lay low until the banter passes. I expect anything, really. Anything except for what she said to me then.

“Yadyra, I want you to be honest with me.” She looks me in the eyes, the molten gold in her chest swirling about slowly as she turns. “Am I a good captain? No, a good dragon?”

I stare at her, stunned. She wants my opinion on this? I frown, looking down. I want to say no, mainly because of how rough she can be on the crew when they’re only trying to help. And yet, I can’t. I recall how she took me onto her crew, despite my lack of experience. I remember how sympathetic she was to me on the rough days, when I’d find my tools breaking trying to clear the barnacles off the hull. I remember how my few pranks until tonight were taken in stride, at least in the end, and how she’d come to me to laugh about them when the rest of the crew wasn’t around. Kalfu even asked for his advice in matters sometimes, specifically in trade around the few docks located in the Tangled Wood, or in traversing the rivers rather than the great blue. Her anger never seemed to be genuine to me, and she always held a sort of fondness for my antics.

“Captain, I don’t think there are really good or bad dragons, but I know you’re trying your best to at least be a decent one. If I had to say there were good and bad dragons, you’d be one of the good ones.” She looks at me, and I swear that nostalgic sense is about to drown me as I finish speaking. That, and that fond feeling she seemed to have for me was overwhelming. I wait for her to leave, probably with a thank you, and am not disappointed. She’s almost through the door, but stops, glancing back at me.

“You know, your father said the same thing to me once.” She flies out the door, and I stare after her. My father had been a part of her old crew, the one that vanished some time ago on her old ship. I had heard he was a great dragon, and that he was present for the very prank that changed Captain Kalfu’s eyes and, funnily enough, the color of her scales. I never really got to know him well, but I’m happy to hear the praise. I begin to curl myself beneath the covers when she pokes her head back in, the whirlpools swirling once again.

“By the way, I’d stay up here if I were you. I may be fond of your pranks, but I think Cambrie’s still spitting at Firth about your little stunt. I think she believes it was Lila’s idea.” She winks at me before she darts away again, and I can’t help but chuckle as I snuggle into the covers.

I can still hear the other captain spitting below, and I’m happy to know that my prank was, overall, a complete success.
