Molly doesn't know where she is. One minute she was in peaceful Ashfall, flying the coastline and making notes. The next minute, an ashy outcrop in the middle of the ocean. The pieces weren't hard to put together: there must have been an eruption, a sudden one that even the volcanologists couldn't always predict. She'd been knocked unconscious somehow- fumes? a piece of flying rock? and ended up in the unmapped ocean. The currents or a friendly porpoise had pulled her to this rock. The thing to do, then, was to fly home. Easier said than done- her whole body ached. There was nothing but ocean in sight, no indication of which way would send her flying home. And where was home? Molly knew her name, she knew she came from a place called Ashfall, she remembered black rocks and lava and heat. She knew she was a cartographer (whatever that was). She knew how to fly, and other pieces of contextless knowledge, practical and impractical that bubbled up from the fog of her aching head. She knew that, and only one other thing. Molly knew she was a Guardian, (whatever that was) and she knew the yellow crystal around her neck was the most important thing she had. It had survived the sea when most of her other clothing had been ripped to shreds. She knew she had to protect that necklace with her life, and she knew one day it would lead her home. * Molly stayed there almost a month while she healed. She discovered after a while that it was part of a chain of islands, most bigger and less barren than that one. She made longer and longer flights, testing her wings, and found more islands with strange creatures and plants. She tries to learn everything she can about a place before she leaves for the next, hoping that on one she'll find other dragons who can lead her home. Like a habit, she memorizes the location of each one so that she won't ever be lost again. |
