You told me you could reach me
Through the darkness of the night
And I warned you that your wishes
Were not for the faint of mind

You told me you could reach me
Through the tangled woods of my heart
But my branches are warped and twisted
Toxic and deadly in equal parts

You told me you could reach me
I warned you, didn't I?
But you forged ahead into the shadows
And in your search you left my side

You told me you could reach me
But you've lost your way in the murk
I knew and accepted that would happen -
Yet why does losing you still hurt?

It's common knowledge that Shade magic isn't for the faint of heart, mind, and insanity. In other words, aside from Arcane, the other ten flights have far too much sense to meddle with the Shade. However, if there is a Flight that would be fitting to do research on dark, corruptive magic, then Shadow dragons are contender to the throne. Being the Shadow flight, it comes as no surprise that shadelings know a lot about the unknown, unsafe, and uneasy - especially compared to your usual Arcane tendency to poke everything till it explodes, and if it doesn't explode - poke it.. Even better - Shadow dragons are far more careful (though, to be fair, Arcane dragons haven't set the bar too high, seeing as they don't care about meddling with corruptive magic as long as the end result is interesting.) In any case, dragons of the Shadow Flight are intimately familiar with the origin of the Shade's power, and are also probably more likely to find out more about it without also destroying Sornieth.

Such precautionary behavior isn't without its cons, though, and Kyrissa of Mirage Isle knows this best. Shade magic is a dangerous field, and she understands it to be incredibly deadly, especially to her clanmates. To that end, Kyrissa made sure that her personal quarters were on the highest point of the island, at the top of a tower also on top of the giant tree library - which is about as far away from the rest of the clan as one can get. As an extra precaution, her laboratory is enchanted with a number of protective spells, to the point anything short of nuclear blast would do as much harm as a drifting feather. Safe and secure inside her chambers, Kyrissa performs her rituals and mixes up brews in pursuit of Shade magic. Nobody is quite sure what she wants to achieve, but they're polite enough to ask. Even when it's clear that something is cackling evilly from inside the lab.

Aside from her Shade research, Kyrissa also serves as a potioneer in the clan. If you need a health elixir, or hair growth potion, or gold muck from your newest awakened Familiar, this is the dragon you want to see. Though she is far from being an expert at potionmaking, Kyrissa's concoctions are nothing to sneeze at. She is capable of replicating any brew on the first try, and if she can't, well, she'll definitely get it on the second try. Or she'll eradicate the existence of that potion so she won't have to admit she wasn't able to make it.

Additionally, Kyrissa also serves as a mage in the clan. She's not the head mage, of course, so she doesn't really get involved when smaller experiments and whatnots are underway. But when magic is required for a large defensive spell, or an offensive attack, or any innovation going on in the Isle, Kyrissa can be trusted to lend a hand. Then immediately disappear back to her laboratory to do whatever shady thing it is that she's doing in there.

Unsurprisingly, most of the time, it's difficult to find Kyrissa, as she's usually occupied with her research and experiments, and subsequently locked away in her chambers. This isn't because she hates other dragons - there's simply a limit to how much social interaction she can stand weekly, and as far as she's concerned, her research is far more interesting than any social interaction could be. Furthermore, while Kyrissa dabbles in magic from all eleven flights, her acquaintance with Shade magic also means she knows how crucial it is that she stays away from other dragons, for fear she corrupts them. Sure, she knows the protective spells and precautions that need to be taken to study Shade magic, but that doesn't extend to other dragons. And knowing some dragons, even if they did know the protective spells, they probably wouldn't use it anyway.

However, there was a time when Kyrissa wasn't alone in her research. Once upon a time, Melvil, a young scholar that often visited the library, was her assistant. The young Wildclaw was kindhearted and confident, and he insisted on helping Kyrissa, despite her many warnings about dragons working together on Shade magic - especially when one of them barely knew the protective spells required, and was far too cocky to even contemplate things would go wrong. However, Melvil was stubborn, and so for months, he played the role of Kyrissa's helper. Unfortunately, good times didn't last, and during a particularly volatile experiment, he was blinded and scarred. Kyrissa was horrified, but there was nothing she could do, especially against a magic as corrupt as that of the Shade's. Melvil, for his part, never returned to her laboratory, deteriorating into a quieter version of his old self. After his departure, Kyrissa swore to never get close to another dragon again. After all, no matter how much it hurt, it was better than letting others get hurt.
