Auron
The Bone-Carver

Role:
Auron works as a Bone-Carver under the House of Guilds. His job is mostly the crafting of Kihl - the currency of the Froslands - though he also produces art pieces to sell during the elemental festivals.

In spite of what one might think, being a Bone-Carver is no easy thing. In addition to the long hours he spends not only carving Kihl to near identical perfection but also imbuing them with charms known only by official Bone-Carvers that prove their legitimacy, he is also expected to collect the majority of his own materials. By tradtition Kihl are carved from the bones of felled foes on the battlefield, so Auron must frequently join ranks with the House of Guards either to scavenge in their wake or take a more active approach.

Personality and Relationships:

Auron is a fairly stubborn dragon, but a peaceful one. He enjoys the quiet routine of his work, and dislikes sudden change. This has made him patient, and diligent. However, Auron often finds himself so lost in the details that he loses track of the bigger picture.

Fairly serious, Auron is the kind of dragon to meet every joke with a half-amused grunt even as his peers roll around on the floor in laughter. In its own way, his stern personality has an endearing quality to it, and has made him a favourite at the inns late in the evening. Often his arrival is celebrated with a cheer, to which he'll nod with an unmoving scowl, before he is captured by whichever dragon most needs someone to air their grievances to that night. For his seeming lack of personality makes him a great listener, and really, sometimes a dragon needs someone who will tell them 'just get on with it, complaining won't make it any better.'

Father

Though his difficulties with his mother has caused tension between Auron and his father, Orion has been more understanding than Star. It was Orion who first reached out, with the help of Opheria, to try and reunite their family, and as such he and Auron have been able mostly restore their mutual trust.

Mother

During the civil war, Auron sided with Scree against his mother, and it has wounded their relationship deeply. Though he loved his mother deeply, Auron held little faith in her capabilities as a ruler; a leader, perhaps, but he was granted a front-row seat to her views on politics, and thought her approach ineffectual and naive. He has made an effort to restore the trust between them for the sake of his son, Peroxis, but repairs are slow-going, and it is doubtful that the scar worn by both of them will ever fully fade.

Mate

Opheria is Auron's mate, and one of the few dragons capable of drawing him out of his serious mood. The two have been close since their youth, so it is easy for Opheria to make her mate smile; a feat so impressive that guests often demand it as a party trick. Auron adores Opheria's free, somewhat wild spirit, even if it does often threaten the steady pace he prefers in life. For love, he would gladly sacrifice his stability.

Sister

Auron and Aenje were once close, with Aenje always acting as protector despite being younger. Where Auron was stoic and stilted, she was vibrant and pro-active, always seeking out adventures while being careful to respect the routine that helped Auron feel safe. Often she would bring him back materials to work with, as she adored her brother's art. Her loss was devastating to Auron and sent him deeper into his carefully-crafted schedule. He still visits the forests she sleeps in, though no one can tell him where, and leaves her carvings she would have liked.

Auron's craving for routine comes from the years of uncertainty that consumed his childhood. Raised during the clan's most fraught years, Auron was plagued by anxiety since an early age. He often eavesdropped on his parents, which made him privvy to all of the clan's most secretive struggles; a terrifying thing for a dragon of any age, let alone one so young. His greatest fears were losing his family and his home, and more than once he came close to both. As he grew older, he hid his worries behind schedules and rituals, which gave him more control over his life. Of greatest help, however, was carving. He started by chiselling designs into the trophies his parents and friends would bring back from the Front for him, then eventually the bones he earned himself. As a currency system formed in the clan, he volunteered to help in its official craft, if just to keep himself busy. Many years passed, and it became his career.

For several peaceful years, Auron enjoyed a happy life focused on his craft. He was mated to his childhood best friend, and had less reason to fear for his loved ones.

When the Froslands were corrupted, one of Aurons' greatest fears finally came true. To remove the corruption that had infested the Wild Lord Hallow, Auron's sister, Aenje, chose to take the corruption upon herself. This transformed her irreversibly into a facimilie of a Wild Lord, damned to maddness that would be contained by eternal slumber. Unprepared to face the loss of his sister, Auron's anger turned on his mother. He blamed Star for failing to protect them, for allowing the Froslands to slip so far out of her control that Diasera was able to continue on her corrupt path for years unchallenged. When the building tensions between Scree and Star flared, Auron sided against his mother, supporting Scree's right to rule.

Ultimately Opheria was able to talk him down from the conflict, and together they helped to broker a peace deal that lead to the Restructuring. However, it was too late to undo his betrayal of Star.

Since the civil war, Auron has returned to his work as a bone carver, and he is happy, even if he cannot shake the feeling that things have irreversibly changed.

Auron likes to keep a strict routine: Wake up, take breakfast with his mate, go to work, go home, spend time with his family and whatever hairbrained scheme Opheria has concocted, go to the inn, go home, and sleep. He keeps to his schedule like clockwork, except on days off when he might allow himself an extra half hour in bed. The certainty comforts him, and he struggles to settle if he doesn't know what to expect the next day.

During his scheduled free-time, Auron will either sculpt, or seek out materials to sculpt with. His preferred mediums are bone and wood, but he will settle for rock and clay if he must. It lets him relax and let out his creativity, which can become stifled by his lacking spontaneity.

Auron is a master craftsman, able to craft fine details that even a fae or veilspun would struggle to achieve. He learned this incredible skill through a lifetime of practice, and is one of the few dragons tolerant enough of repetitive tasks to be employed making Kihl for the clan. Though part of the process has become automated, Auron's work is to such quality that he can compete against the machines and is at times even more reliable. Additionally the unique enchantments that he and the other kihl carvers provide make it impossible to entirely replace them.

Bone-carving is not Auron's only skill. He is also a warrior, and trained under Prime no less. Though his magic is better suited to the kind of charms he uses on the Kihl rather than for combat, he makes up for this through sheer strength. When he serves in battle he is often on the front lines, charging the enemy head-on. He uses his large antlers to help break up the opposing lines and scatter the enemy so that the rest of their forces can move through.

Ice-binding

The process through which Auron marks the kihl is known colloquially as 'ice-binding.' This involves wrapping the kihl in his own personal elemental fingerprint, which is irreplicable by any other dragon. The distinct mark of everh kihl-carver is published into a tome where they each imbue one of the pages, and is updated annually. This is then distributed out to each town and city within the territory to be used to settle any disputes over counterfeits. The ice-binding also provides a secondary means of verification that allows the kill to endure a specific shattering spell that is taught to any dragons handling money.

Lore note:

Part of Auron's reasoning for siding with Scree is Aenje. He believes that if they hadn't been so passive in their approach towards Diasera, she never would have gotten close to success, and Aenje would not have had to take on Hallow's corruption to save the Froslands.
