No dragon is entirely sure if Strain is alive-he certainly isn't a normal dragon. He seems to come and go by thoughts alone, leaving behind a sharp, sweet smell when he vanishes, and the same smell being the only warning that he is about to appear. He's been known to reanimate the dead, read minds, and predict the future-and everyone is scared of him. Strain goes where he wants, when he wants, and no one has ever been able to predict what that might be. He's unstable and maniacal, and even the wisps of the forest don't like him. Shyner thinks Strain is unnatural and disturbing, while Paradisiac and the other members of the Shadowbinder's entourage find his very existence concerning-they cannot figure out where he came from.

For the most part, Strain is a nuisance to all clans in and around the tangled wood-if they don't cremate their dead, he brings them back as mere shadows of their living selves. His powers of prophecy mean that anything he says could be true-but the skydancer isn't known for his altruism or his kindness. Strain did reach out to Sky not long after she first realized she could create acolytes. It seemed that he mostly wanted her to know that her powers were far from true necromancy-he didn't want the little spiral getting a big head and thinking she could do what he does. But he did offer to work with Burst on researching Sky's condition, and without his help it would have taken much longer to find texts on primal conditions-though Burst was far from pleased when Strain asked for a rain check from the loremaster.
