The life of a priestess was chosen for Xyla. She had never wanted it, nor had she ever had much faith. Oh certainly she knew that the Plaguebringer existed. She just didn't think it followed that just because a god existed they ought to be worshiped.

So one night she left it all behind and ran.

In retrospect she should have planned better. The rain hadn't let up for two days, and priestesses robes were not built for the elements. She was exhausted, starved, and soaked through the skin when she spotted the campfire ahead. The looming black Guardian that tended it was terrifying, but she was too hungry for fear now. They had around them all the spoils of hunting and foraging and her mouth watered. Before she could speak to announce herself her stomach gurgling gave her away.

Anhun, for that was their name, proved to be friendlier than their imposing visage would imply. That night she slept with the first full belly she’d had in ages, safe and warm by their fire. And she slept there the next night too after spending her day in companionable silence with them helping them work. When, on the third night, Anhun spread their star coverd wing over her as she lay next to them like a second night sky she sighed and leaned into their warmth.

Xyla decided she liked life in Anhun’s lair when the two of them returned a few days later loaded with the supplies. There were dragons who called themselves goddesses living among them, but no one seemed to worship them exactly. There were no priestesses here. She was expected to do chores along with everyone else, so she traded her robes for working clothes. Beyond that she was free to live and behave as she liked. And Anhun was here, which was more important still than all the rest.
