His people had been forced to flee in the past. They had also fought. Sometimes, no matter their chosen path, they had won. Sometimes- most times- they had lost.

So when the dragons came again to his people after years of mutual hate and carefully found peace, Sovann- young, brave, but not a fool- knew what lay ahead. He tried to negotiate a treaty, a way to keep the land their own- of course he did, of course- and he tried to stop the threats before they became reality, tried to stop his exhausted people from rising up in rage and despair. But when the first strike fell and blood was shed on both sides, he finally acknowledged that there were only two choices left to them. Just as there were only two outcomes.

Fight or run. Die... or live.

It was not the choice he wanted to make, nor the choice his council wanted to make, but his people? His people would cry for their ancestral home, but they would live to pass on their tales of the lost land. Perhaps one day they would even march to reclaim it. But for now? Now, they would live.

Making agreements with yet another dragon clan felt like the selling off his soul. It wasn’t what he wanted for his people, to live under the thumb of someone who would oppress them in the end, but at the time he felt he had no choice. There was nowhere to run that wasn’t already inhabited by a species that hated them, and Aethereus, at least, had proven themselves as gentle masters to those who called the valley beyond their forest home. They would stay for a time, he told his people, working the fields and hunting the hills until they were back to their full strength, and then they would decide what they would do.

With time, he came to realize that the other beastfolk who called Aethereus home were those like his own people, clans and families who had lost or left their birthlands in the hopes of better times. Aethereus had taken them all seemingly with great kindness, but Sovann couldn’t help but remain suspicious. Dragons were, after all, dangerous and unkind creatures, no matter the masks they wore.

It was only a matter of time.
