It is truly unfortunate that phlebotomy is such an unpleasant word to most ears. If it were perhaps more musical, then maybe dragons would not view Tepes with such a tentative, fragile sort of trust. Of course, sound alone wouldn't change the fact that he mostly works with blood.
Truly, it's not as gory as it sounds. Rumours swirl around Ulalume regularly, claiming that he siphons off blood for his own nourishment, or poisons the blood of his patience for the rush of adrenaline that comes with starting a new experiment. These rumours, though, as most rumours tend to be, stem from a deep misunderstanding of the truth.
Truly, it's not as gory as it sounds. Rumours swirl around Ulalume regularly, claiming that he siphons off blood for his own nourishment, or poisons the blood of his patience for the rush of adrenaline that comes with starting a new experiment. These rumours, though, as most rumours tend to be, stem from a deep misunderstanding of the truth.

For one, yes, Tepes does find nourishment in blood. Traditional solid foods upset his sensitive digestive system, and so he instead drinks the blood of hunted creatures. The rest of the clan enjoys the meat and other spoils, while he has another meal without guilt. There is no latching onto dragons' throats and sucking them dry involved, though he supposes that notion comes from his sampling methods. Occasionally, he must use his needle-sharp teeth to obtain a sample, but this is never done without the express consent of his patient.
And the idea of unwittingly experimenting on the dragons who come to him for help? Tepes isn't sure whether he ought to laugh or cry. All his life, he has kept to the edge of things, never welcome in social circles, never trusted on first glance. Dragons fear him, his appearance, his work. But his studies are his passion, and more than that, they might save lives. |

He focuses on the way strains of gembond, opal, and filigree manifest in dragons, looking for the reasons some dragons contract harmless strains while others find themselves encased in mineral deposits, their movements hindered, their lives drastically altered. All he is certain of now is that the answer lies in the blood, but he does not yet have enough data to draw true conclusions.

He doesn't even have to find a cure, if only he can find a way to manage these conditions for the better.
But for now, he must be content with taking samples when granted permission and acting as Ulalume's lonely phlebotomist. The solitude gives him many hours to ponder and postulate and alleviates the fear that someone will use the rumours about him to justify stealing his hard-won research, but nonetheless, it is a lonely position to hold. The blood-filled vials on his shelves, though full of information, offer little company at all.
