"Tell me which one this is again?" The Ridgeback pointed to a constellation on his side from his position rolled onto his back, feet in the air.
"They call that one Caelum," the Skydancer above him smiled, falling to rest beside the young Ridgeback. He flopped back over onto his belly, bumping her shoulder with his snout.
"And this one?" This time the stars danced over the bridge of his nose, disappearing beneath a sparkling crack of opal.
"Pyxis, dear," she cooed, resting her head on the sun-bathed grass and closing her eyes.
"Will you tell me more when you wake up?"
"Of course. Rest, Elonas."

From the moment of his birth, Elonas felt a strange attraction to the sky. He often followed his fascination; leaving his old clan's territory late at night in order to gain a better view of the sky, and spending countless hours teaching himself about the stars instead of learning how to catch fish, as a true Ridgeback should. He was abandoned as a toddler, left to follow his heart into the stars as he so desired.
Elonas didn't expect that there would be any dragon out there like him; his unnatural affixation with astronomy was peculiar for his breed to say the least. He was a point of ridicule, not only among his former clan but amongst those who grew to know him as he travelled. They would often tease him about the pattern of his skin - his obsession was reflected in not only his mind but his appearance, too. Elonas, as he travelled, learnt the hard way that sometimes, it was easier to be solitary. He didn't need anyone to slow him down - he was content with the company provided by the night sky.

That was when he found Marinella , and his loneliness surged like a foreign cloud. He'd almost forgotten how it felt to yearn for the company of another, the child-like need to be held and comforted emerging after such a long time of being buried within himself. The first thing that caught his eye was her markings - a sort of nebula stretched its way across her wingspan, glittering and writhing in the sunlight. She noticed him too - two lost souls, orbiting towards one another, on a direct collision course.
They'd settled into clan Ulalume shortly afterwards, Marinella adopting a foreign maternal instinct over Elonas, and him falling into the seemingly designated role of being her young. Finally, they were able to settle - happy, free, content |
