In Scandinavian folklore, the mylingar are the phantasmal incarnations of the souls of unbaptized children that had been forced to roam the earth until they could persuade someone (or otherwise cause enough of a ruckus to make their wishes known) to bury them properly.

Mylingen doesn’t remember much of his own existence or how he had come to be. Forced to wander the lands in search of his mother, who he has never known. His wails and cries echo the forests he roams, weary travelers began to fear this part of the forest and tried to avoid it when they had to venture through to visit the Gemini Clan. He was discovered by Backahasten, who decided to help the young soul find peace. He brought the soul to the Abandoned Ruins a little ways from the river, where a ghostly spirit named Kyrkogrim lived. Mylingen was given a home and a make shift family to call his own. He even found a hole in the cemetery to sleep in. He doesn’t venture far from the ruins anymore; mainly hanging by Kyrkogrim, Hollow, Backahasten, and Nattravnen. However, he does enjoy heading to the Daycare to play with the other hatchlings and Arodan.

Kyrkogrim, who goes by Church, and his wife, Hollow watched over the hatchling; it became apparent that Mylingen was still searching for his mother. Hollow wondered if he was a victim of the Child-Eaters. So Church began to search for some answers. The down side is that he is unable to leave the Ruins grounds. So when the trail lead off further into the woods, Church got Backahasten and Nattravnen to search for him and to report back to him. Backahasten stayed along the brooke and Nattravnen flew through the canopy. Mylingen joyfully followed Backahasten, unknowingly guided him closer towards some vital clues.

While Mylingen never remembered of his origins, his spirit was always drawn towards one section of the forest. No one has followed him there before, but Backahasten knew that this must be where Mylingen disappears to when they cannot find him.

Nattravnen followed the pair from the skies, seeing how Mylingen seemed to have manifested to join the search. He could see the forest open to a tiny clearing and landed at the edge of the forest. Backahasten saw that Mylingen was venturing away from the brook and knew that he needed to part from his power source. He emerged from the water, turning into a more solid figure with a ghostly appearance.

Mylingen played within the flowers within the clearing while the adults looked around. There in the center of the small clearing was a tiny abandoned cabin. Backahasten stayed outside with Mylingen while Nattravnen explored the building. It must have been abandoned for years, cobwebs in the corners, dust covered belongings. It looked like a normal building despite being abandoned. There is an odd smell, a bitter magic sort of smell. Nattravnen was about to open a door when Mylingen came running inside and ran through a different door, beside the cold fireplace. Backahasten and Nattravnen looked at each other silently before slowly walking towards that door and opened it.

The door lead to a basement. The smell was stronger, mildew and iron was mingled with it. It was dark, but when they got to the bottom, anger filled them. There were many Witch artifacts; scrolls, circles carved into the walls and floors, and various bottles filled with who knows what. Their attention was drawn to Mylingen, who was playing with a blanket. When they got closer, their stomachs dropped. The source was within a cauldron like crib, a small skeleton burnt almost to ash, with some bones surviving the flames.

Backahasten grabbed Mylingen, followed by Nattravnen and returned to report their findings to Church. Backahasten returned to his brook with Nattravnen took to the skies again. Church and Lorien were waiting outside for them. He had called Lorien to visit to ask some questions. Church wasn’t thrilled to find that Mylingen had “escaped” to play with them but he also had an uneasy feeling after seeing his companions’ expressions.

Lorien was able to assist in the confirmation of the Child-Eater evidence and assisted in releasing Mylingen from the spiritual pull to that place; allowing Lorien to spiritually and literally burn the cabin and everything inside to ash. Mylingen was finally free from his tragic and still not entirely known past but remains within the Ruin’s grounds. His range to explore now condensed within the Redwood Forest as well as the Gemini Clan’s land territory.

“A tale tells about a mother who killed her new-born and put it in a tub with a scissor on top of it to stop it from coming back to haunt her. When it was time for her to marry, a dance was to be held in the house. During a pause in the music a little voice could be heard from underneath the floorboards:

“Benena ä lång,
Å bytta ä trång
Å om de inte vorë för den store saxa
Så skulle ja opp
Å dansa mä mor min!”

“My limbs are long
An’ the tub’s small
An’ if it weren’t for the big scissor
I would rise up
An’ dance with my ma!”

A pair of bold men crawled down and found as told a tub with a scissor on top. They removed the tool and when the music once again played a tall young man appeared. He danced with the bride til she fell down dead and then disappeared without a trace.
Children who had been buried or left in the woods usually reminded the mothers of their presence by loud crying and screaming and were said to seek revenge to anyone who would come close to their resting place. The myling is said to chase lone wanderers at night and jump on their backs, demanding to be carried to the graveyard, so they can rest in hallowed ground. Mylings are thought to be enormous and grow heavier as they got closer to the graveyard, to the point where any person carrying one would sink into the soil. If one should prove unable to make it into the cemetery, the myling kills its victim in rage.”
