There's a lullaby floating
Through the darkness of the night
That reminds you of all your failures
Of your pain
Your past
Your plights

There's a lullaby that echoes
Inviting you to dance
Beneath the trees
Where you can forget
Your worries in the moonlight
Shed your burdens and be free

It's a devil's
Sweetly whispered lies
It's a siren's luring call
Yet so many have surrendered
To their embrace
And met their destined falls.
It's an angel and a demon
It'll tear all your worldly burdens
Apart
And as peace flows into your body
So will your soul depart

And they're lovely, hopeful creatures
Shining like the vast,
Unending night
And you can't help but
See and believe
They'll set everything right

But the problems we face
In the world
Are simply challenges
To overcome
If we let others make an ending
For us
What will we have lost; have won?

So close your ears to the melody
Don't let their beauty catch your eyes
Extinguish the flame of desire -
Don't you dare be mesmerised.

Origins of the Haunters

A mysterious predator has crept forth from the Starfall Isles to spread across all of Sornieth, disrupting the flow of magic and consuming the dreams of all they come across. Not a single survivor has managed to escape their clutches, and even the most vile nightmares flee from their approach. Many a brave researcher has set off to uncover this strange phenomenon, but none have return the same... or with their souls, on that matter.

We call them the Starfall Haunters. With a unique and terrifying ability hidden in their wings, they now stalk the skies and shadows of all eleven flights. They are hunters and ambushers, creatures of chaos made to disrupt magic where it is the strongest. With their wings, they seek out the strongest mages and petrify them in crystal, leaving their victims in a helpless frozen state, perfect for Haunters to extract their souls. Once their souls have been devoured, the Haunters gain any magical abilities they might've had, growing more and more powerful with every victim.

These menaces can now be found everywhere, but it did not used to be that way. Once upon a time, these Haunters were subjects of an experiment in the lower basements of the Observatory. When two haywire chemical reactions simultaneously exploded, the following outburst of magic changed those creatures, turning them into unstable predators of the dark. Their wings, bearing fake eyes, became imbued with the ability to turn anything into crystal.

The researchers of the Observatory attempted to contain them, but with every fallen mage, the Haunters became more and more unstoppable. Finally, like ghosts, they slipped out of the Observatory. By land, by sea, by air, they spread across the rest of Sornieth like an unyielding plague. No sightings of them have been reported, but soulless crystal statues mark where they'd been. The only warning one can use to fend themselves from this evil is the disruption in magic the Haunters cause with their presence. When magic starts reacting strangely, you know they are there. It is unknown precisely why this is, but evidence points towards the explosion from whence they came. Perhaps the Starfall Haunters have adopted the unstable nature of their birth, and thus disrupts everything around them. Further research is required.

But while the Starfall Haunters seem like an unstoppable predator, this is not true. It is known that they will never prey upon weaker mages, and are especially attracted to those who wield dark magic. Optimistic researchers say that this is because the Haunters are not evil; instead, they simply hunt down evildoers who fool around with magic greater than they. But whether or not this claim is true...

Well, that's something you'll have to find out for yourself.

Characteristics

Though not much research can be gathered on the Starfall Haunters, with the cooperation of all eleven flights, their general characteristics have been recorded. It is agreed that they are finicky creatures, and can often be found near warm places, such as the Ashfall Wastes, Sunbeam Ruins, or the warmer parts of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. They also enjoy noise and rain, and are known to populate the Shifting Expanse for that reason.

Clans that claim to host a Starfall Haunter say that they are clean, neat creatures with strict disciplines for themselves, focused on doing everything step by step. However, the irony lies in the fact they hate organization in any other form, including all attempts to educate them in the regular dragon etiquette. Trying to get them to sit down in the library will get a book thrown at your face. In some ways, this makes them the worst alchemist, as they refuse to do anything written in text. Instead, they will throw everything they can get their claws on in the cauldron, and then complain when it blows up in their faces.

Haunters are especially protective of their wings, and spend many hours every day polishing their leather and scales. They take a single bath in a hot spring every month, shedding their scales as they do. This ritual appears to be sacred to their kind, or perhaps it is simply because they are the most vulnerable when they are shedding. Either way, clans living near hot springs know to stay hidden when the Haunters arrive to take their baths.

While Haunters seem to enjoy devouring the souls of others for magical power, spirits are not their main diets, and they are capable of eating ordinary food as well. Small rodents seem to be their favorites, and younger Haunters will practice their ambushing techniques by swooping down on the unfortunate pest that had decided to wander near them. After a full meal, the Haunters will find a nook to hang upside-down from the ceiling, and hide the patterns on their wings by folding them when they sleep.

They are a highly isolated subspecies, preferring to be on their own. No interactions between the members of the species have been seen, but they must meet every once in a while, or the subspecies wouldn't be able to survive...

... Although, there are rumors of their previous victims remerging from their petrified states as the next generation of Haunters.

shadowvs1.png Flight: Shadow Haunters are undoubtedly one of the most dangerous predators to come across. With an innate ability to blend in with the darkness and power over illusions, they are capable of catching virtually anyone and anything off-guard. They are the rarest Haunters to be recorded, due to their evasive nature. However, they retain the hot-spring-loving mindset of their subspecies, and are known to haunt underground hot springs. They are easily distracted by shiny things, and so one of ways to ward off a Shadow Haunter would be to place a jewelry box or glowing object around your lair. It's more than likely they'll decide to take that object instead of your life.

Breed: Nocturnes were the first discovered branch of the Starfall Haunters, though other breeds are being quickly uncovered. This may be due to their inherent nature as blank slates, thus making them more susceptible to the original explosion that gave them their characteristics. Nocturne Haunters will often mimic the voices of other dragons to lure in their victims. They are not the strongest members of their subspecies, given their diminutive size, but as record shows, sometimes, trickery is enough.
Divider-640.png
Primary Gene: Skink Skink: A remnant of their time as mere experiments in the Observatory, the initial blast included the Skink mutagen, which was then absorbed by the first members of the subspecies. It has displayed itself in an eerie dark blue that helps the Haunters blend into their surroundings, especially if they are underwater. It also helps Haunters pass off as regular dragons, should they ever feel the need to assimilate with the regular crowd.
Divider-640.png
Secondary Gene: Noxtide Noxtide: A Haunter's wings are their most important assets, and also important when determining their activity and health. With the patterns on their wings vary from dragon to dragon, the colouration can be used to tell their magical abilities. The more victims a Haunter has consumed, the brighter and more vividly coloured their wings will be, and the more powerful the Haunter is.
Divider-640.png
Tertiary Gene: Peacock Peacock: A tiger cannot hide its stripes, nor can a Haunter hide its fake eyes, which glow in the dark and are prone to exposing the Haunter during its hunt. However, those eyes are also a Haunter's greatest weapons and the source of their strange ability, as staring into them will petrify you and turn your body into crystal. Thus, Haunters take great pains to keep their fake eyes uncovered, as they are unable to feed without the use of them.
