The Winds of Reedcleft Ascent

Before there was the Breezen clan, before even the most ancient of clans dug their talons into the sparse turf of the Reedcleft and sprang towards the sky, there was Flow. Not in any way recognizable to her chosen family, but a raw, primal power, screaming out her wild nature like the most feral and ornery of creatures. She whisked through the land, carving deep gouges into the earth and flattening even the sturdiest of trees, howling into the sky to prove her superiority.

After one particularly rough play session with her brother Twist, her father, the Windsinger, descended to her. "My dearest canyon wind," he said, "you blow too roughly. All others in the sky are stripped from their drafts and blown about willy nilly wherever you fly."
Flow looked at him and said, "But Twist rages for seasons on end, and you do not ask him to calm his temper. Why must I?"

"Twist has great rage and energy in him. He was no peaceful gift from Fire like you were, and he knows to limit his violence outside his territory," the Wind Deity reproached. "You, on the other wing, have no respect for those who must fly through your winds and make it so not even the mightiest of dragons can make it through your challenge."

To this, Flow scoffed and flared her mighty wings, sending the swirling wind around her into a frenzy. "Then why should I calm myself? They clearly are not worthy of the sky if they cannot handle my own currents. How could they handle Twist when they cannot even fly through me? Hah! They are not even worthy of being called your children if they cannot even stay in the sky!"

The Windsinger looked down at his second oldest child with a grave expression. She gazed back, defiant and arrogant, certain she was in the right. He shakes his head and says, "I have been remiss teaching you. None can match you in speed and ferocity beyond your older sibling, and so you cannot understand what limits are, nor how you impose them upon others. I will make this wrong right."

Flow had lowered her wings while he talked, her expression turning wary as the fierce winds around her suddenly began to swirl as if Twist was nearby. She squawked indignantly as she felt her wings shrink away, and her powers diminish. When it was done, she fell to the ground, buffered by her father's power, turned into a small flightless hatchling.

"You will learn from those you scorn. You will understand their struggle, their hopes and dreams, and why your arrogance is nothing but shameful. You are blind to it, your pride is your blindfold, and you must remove it yourself. Until then, you have no right to the sky," her father boomed before flying off.

For three days, Flow screamed and cursed the sky from which she had been rejected. Her little wings, once grandiose and massive things that would cut through the sky with ease, could not lift her even a foot from the ground. At midday on the third day, Flow heard something big approaching. She turned and puffed herself up, unwilling to be cowed by some stranger.

The stranger was a spiral, who, even though was lesser for its small wings, still impressed her for its ability to flutter about and twist on a dime. "Oh," the dragon said, startled. "Little coatl, where are your parents?" It paused a moment, and then said, "Ah you're lost; this is no good. Come with me, maybe we can find them at the crossroads."

Flow, silent, nodded her head imperiously and deigned to follow the spiral. The quicker she got this over with, the better.
