Biography

UMBRUM : mind veiled in shadow

One of their guards had watched, just as the night was falling, as a comet trailed down from the sky. It grew and grew until it had crashed in a ball of fire somewhere near the Glowingwater Clan’s lair. A group of guards was dispatched out to the comet’s location, the fire fading as the sun set and stars took its place.

What the gaurds found alarmed them, for it was neither stone nor metal. It was, indeed, a dragon. They thought it was sure to be dead, seeing as it had fallen from the stars themselves, but upon carefully approaching it they found that the guardian appeared to be simply... sleeping. Stars glittered on and off of his starry hide. The gaurds touched his shoulder and there was no reaction. With a few glances at eachother, the decided to haul the guardian onto their various shoulders and bring him to their home for aid.

Upon arriving, they brought him to the den of the Alchemist - Keasar. He took one confused look before ushering the gaurds to place him in an extra nest. Marchosias, Keasar’s mate and aid, came to his side. Within minutes they had found nothing except the fact that he was in a coma. Gaurds and volunteer dragons were assigned to be by his side every day, in the case that the guardian did wake up.

Months passed before a Wildclaw with celestial heritage found out about this comatose dragon. Pyxis, of course, spent one day watching over him and heard how they’d found him before volunteering to watch over him every day after that. This was the only way she could figure out more about the stars, more than her father had told her. Nepaku soon joined her, and they spoke together while the days passed by.

Nobody knew what was going on inside that gaurdian’s head. Some thought he was brain dead, nothing circling in his mind. Others thought he was dreaming. The latter was closer.

Only it was no dream. It was a nightmare.

A war between two dragons raged in his mind, one being him and the other a crazed murderer. The reason he had been chased down from the sky was that he hadn’t been able to catch the very dragon he was now fighting. Teeth were bared, circles were run into the nebulous ground from their constant battle. Claws flashed and moves were made, and yet it appeared that no one was winning. He fought in constant fear that he would fall off the edge of the stars, which they currently stepping dangerously close to, and the fact that he could be killed. This nightmare was a cruel system designed by his grandfather. Winning would result in earning back his place among the stars, while losing would earn him death. Umbrum forced his thoughts away and dodged an attack, striking one of his own in this never ending fight.

Pyxis and Nepaku sighed, blinking tiredly as they watched him. Pyxis’ eyelids drooped, tiredness an opponent she was not able to evade. “Nepaku?” She groaned, stretching, “Do you ever think he’s going to wake up?”

Nepaku shrugged, drawing in the sand. “I don’t know,” he jokingly replied, “Why don’t you read him and see?”

By reading him, Nepaku was suggesting that Pyxis use her compass-like abilities, brought out by her father having come from the stars, to find out what he wanted most.

Pyxis slowly turned and looked at him, eyes wide. “Read... him?” She laughed, jumping around a few times. “Nepaku, you’re a genius!”

“Seriously?” He groaned, covering his face with his talons, “You really havent thought of that yet?” He peeked through his claws, smirking, “Every day I realize how lucky you are I followed you here.”

Pyxis scoffed, giving a grin of her own, “Well, let’s try it!” She placed her talons of her temples - something that helped her focus - and closed her eyes, focusing on the starry guardian in front of her. It was all cloudy, but she gained some sort of a vision from it... An arena among the stars, a battle. Life or death. A name flashed in her head: Umbrum. His name. She tried to open her mind further, learn what he wanted. This... vision into his mind had never happened before. Neither had learning the name of the dragon. She found what he was desperate for just as he thought it in his own mind - Survival Everything she had just seen sucked back into the comatose dragon’s head, and Pyxis stumbled back with a deep breath.

“Whoah,” She whispered, getting back to her feet and stepping closer to the dragon. She blinked, trying to focus again. The Wildclaw thought for a little while, Nepaku watched with a questioning look.

Pyxis now knew what to try. She touched the dragon’s talon, breathing slowly. “Please wake up,” she whispered, a prayer of hope that what she was doing would work. She turned her gaze back down to him, and concentrated. “Umbrum,” she addressed, hoping it would get through to him, “Umbrum. You have to wake up. Listen, you don’t have to win...” she thought, trying to make up the words and a solution, “or lose. There’s another way, do you hear me?” Pyxis stooped closer, “There’s another way.” Again, She exhaled, “Jump, Umbrum. Jump.”

Within Umbrum’s mind, the words we’re getting through - only faintly, but they echoed around the space he was in. It was hard to listen while fighting this other dragon, yet he tried his best. He had no idea where they were coming from, but the last words struck him. Jump, he echoed.

Jump.

Umbrum found himself at the edge of the sky, having been cornered by this other dragon. He bared his teeth defiantly, unleashing a roar that - if he was really there - would have shaken the stars themselves. He folded his wings in and fell - a leap of faith.
Again he tumbled out of the stars, yet this time he flew.

Umbrum sat straight up, drawing in a deep breath. His frantic gaze searched the room around him, landing on Pyxis and Nepaku - one the spitting image of the dragon he had just been fighting, and yet the very one whom had saved him from his torture.

He was awake.
