Mate:38343361p.png
So many had been lost to the disease already. There was no mistaking that some agent of the Plaguebringer had snuck into their lands and sown his deity’s destructive will. With the clan teetering on the edge of complete annihilation, there was little hope to cling to.

“Myles, you can’t do this,” Niva whimpered, raising her head weakly as her mate bustled to and fro in their little grotto. “Even if you find a miracle healer who can help us, who’s to say it won’t be too late? It’s already a miracle that you’ve eluded this disease thus far. Why not escape while you can? Why tempt fate?”

“Niva, dearest, you don’t know how much it pains me to watch you waste away like this,” Mylrais replied, nudging some more provisions into his bag. He paused and gave her a long look. “I need to try. I love you too much to stand idly by and let this disease take you from me.”

With a heavy sigh, Niva let her head fall back between her forelegs. “As your Guardian, I command you to leave this place and never return,” she murmured, struggling to keep the tremor out of her voice. “It is my first duty to keep you safe. If you die to this disease, I will suffer in the afterlife, knowing I wasn’t able to protect you.”

“Niva, I-”

“Go, Myles,” Niva commanded, her voice firm despite the tears beginning to course down her face. “And don’t come back for me.” She closed her eyes and kept them that way until she heard Mylrais leave, his footsteps heavy with grief. “Goodbye, my love,” she whispered, falling into a fitful slumber.

The next week was nothing but torture. Niva’s condition worsened, but nothing felt worse than being separated from Mylrais. He was her Charge, after all, and being apart from him tore at her heart. But she had to endure these feelings. He was safe as long as he wasn’t by her side. There was nothing she could do to protect him now.

As she lay waiting for death to finally release her from her anguish, Niva heard something wonderfully and horribly familiar: the steady thump of her mate’s footsteps. She opened her bleary eyes, taking in his hazy form as he approached. “Myles,” she croaked, unable to speak much louder than a whisper. “I told you to stay away.”

“I couldn’t, not while I knew you were suffering,” Mylrais replied. His voice sounded so far away to Niva, but the fact that she could hear it was a great comfort. “Look, Niva,” he continued. “I’ve brought someone who can help you.”

An even smaller hazy shape bobbed nervously at Mylrais’ side. “I don’t think I have enough magic to heal your entire clan,” the shape said in a jittery voice. “But I imagine you want to save your mate, yes?”

“Of course, Prym,” Mylrais replied, shuffling from foot to foot. “Now, please, make her well. I can’t go another day without her by my side.”

“I’ll do my best,” Prym said, approaching Niva. All at once, his eyes glowed, and a warm feeling blossomed in her chest.

Several hours passed and Niva finally felt strong enough to stand again. Prym’s eyes returned to their usual starry state and he stumbled back, trembling. “You… you should be fine now,” he mumbled, looking a bit weak. “Might I suggest leaving this place now? A magical healing will not stave off a re-infection.”

“Come,” Mylrais said, “We must return Prym to his clan.” He looked up at Niva, affection sparkling in his eyes. “Niva, I am so glad you are here with me. I don’t know what I would have done if you had been gone when I returned.”

Niva shook her head, smiling in spite of herself. “Myles, you lovable fool, I told you not to return.” She chuckles softly and nuzzles against him. “Although, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t glad you did. Let’s go to this new clan and thank them for this wonderful gift.” She turned to Prym and grinned. “Prym, was it? A million thanks for allowing me to continue my vigil over my mate. I am in your debt.”

Prym smiled shakily. “It’s my pleasure,” he replied. “Might I remind you of the danger we’re still in? I really must get home.”

“Then let us be off,” Myles said, marching towards the North. “Come along, both of you. Dragonhome awaits us.”
