Born and raised in a kingdom living in strict servitude to its king, XIII was chosen to serve among the military ranks at a young age. The first series of tests exposed his aptitude in strategy, athleticism, and cool-headedness in the face of stress. From there he was sent to the stealth division. Of the dozens who joined him, he was one of only twenty-three to pass the vigorous and violent pre-joining. He was dubbed “XIII” that day, having finished in the same ranking.

His life was spent training with the most cunning and brutal of masters. From full-fledged assassins to seemingly-innocent apothecaries, he was taught the ways of the courtier and the diplomat, of blending in to gather information without being seen, of blackmail and profit in even the quietest rumor. Weapons became extensions of his own hand and the names of toxins his nightly prayers. So too did he rise in the ranks as his fellow initiates died, some failing the tests before them and others to protect their backs. XIII was well on his way to becoming one of the most powerful men in the nation.

And then he failed.

After refusing to kill a classmate wrongly accused of betrayal but having no proof to back his word, XIII was faced with two futures: death, or binding. Death was by all means the preferable route, for the life a binding was a promise of hopelessness, lifelessness, and enslavement. It would mean living as a ghoul without free will until the day their body gave up and died.

XIII was not a fool, but before he could make his choice a third- one rarely offered and even more rarely recognized- was given.

“He may have failed your test, but he will not fail mine,” a stranger announced the day of XIII’s judgement, causing confusion and then panic. No one knew how the man had slipped within their ranks, or how long he had gone unnoticed. “I will take him under my name and into my service, and his designation will be blotted from your records as if he had died this day.”

“And who are you,” one of the highest of the guild demanded, “that you believe you can enter here uninvited? That you may speak among our council?”

But the stranger had smiled, unmoved by the blades circling his throat, and when he spoke it was with such power that even the most dangerous among them stilled.

“My name is Darius.”

XIII did not see the man again until several hours later, when the brand had been burned from his shoulder and he stood alone with him in an otherwise empty room.

“You will be my right hand,” the man explained, wrapping a too-large coat around XIII’s wiry frame. “I have no need of slaying innocents, but what I do need is a man of your skills. I need a teacher, someone who can help build my armies, someone to lead them- a job, I think, that one day you will fulfill admirably.” The man had straightened the lapels of XIII’s new coat, reached up to flatten XIII’s wayward hair. “You will be one of my most respected generals, my general of the unseen.”

And XIII, young and afraid of death, looked upon the man’s smiling face and saw only mercy.

He served with loyalty, unfailing even in the face of Darius’ cruelty. Even when Darius sent his students to their death, he served. Even when Darius stood at the side of an Old God more monster than man, he remained unwavering. He questioned but only rarely, and when he did so Darius merely smiled; punishment came in other, crueler forms when he least expected it, and yet XIII accepted them as what he had deserved.

When his master led them to war, so too did he go without question.

Though XIII’s memories of that day remain foggy at best, he remembers clearly the sensation of being dragged from the battlefield, of seeing a man shrouded in ash and decaying flesh above. Later he would learn what had befallen his master, but at that moment he had believed Death had come for him at last.

Once again, Darius had saved his life.

As the only surviving general of Darius’ army, XIII deals with training not only assassins and spies but all who join their military ranks- few as they are. His daily responsibilities deal vastly with paperwork dealing with diplomatic matters and civilian needs, often acting as the king’s mouthpiece when concerns are raised by the lower tiers of the kingdom. Most important, however, are his duties as the Right Hand to his lord and king. Though rarely are visitors inclined to enter the kingdom, let alone the castle itself, XIII nevertheless stands as a protective measure at Darius’ side. Adviser, companion, and protection all, he is never far from Darius’ side, distrusting any to take the measures he himself would make in order to keep the man alive. He’s also one of the few who knows Darius’ secret as a lich, and it’s a secret he guards more carefully than any other.

Despite a gentle, thoughtful personality, his loyalty to Darius is without question, making him both a dangerous and yet glorified figure among the general populace. Though many trust him without question and admire him for his ability and willingness to help with even the most mundane of issues, some believe his wit, playfulness, and kindness toward the general public to be a ploy. None can say for certain.
