(Electricity Thief) She was born with lightning in her eyes. This had, to some extent, been true of all the Straif hatchlings for years, but usually it was a simple matter of color, not a brilliant crackle which sparked all the way out to the horns. True lightning had appeared in some other clans, but it was new to the Straif families. "A blessing from the Stormcatcher!" Calbhach declared as he scooped his new daughter from the nest. "Isn't she beautiful, Cliodhna?" "They all are," Cliodhna said flatly, keeping her gaze resolutely on the other three newborns. All Nocturnes, like her; all blue-winged and white-bellied, with otherwise dappled, dark bodies which would be nearly invisible in shadowed forests. They could all be easily trained to disappear in the Tangled Wood or the server rooms of the Lightning Farm, with their eyes being nothing more than a glint... all except the lightning-eyed one. She might be able to hide as well as her siblings in the Spire, but anywhere else those eyes would give her away. Blessing from the Stormcatcher, indeed. Why couldn't such a blessing be given to a Coatl like Calbhach, then? A Nocturne physically incapable of hiding would likely grow up feeling more cursed than blessed. Calbhach was still cooing over the lightning-eyed hatchling when Preachan entered the nesting chamber. Her attention was immediately caught by the hatchling's tiny sparks. "A Primal child?" she said, stepping toward Calbhach. "You must be so proud." "Can she stay with us?" asked Cliodhna, thinking of cables and electricity and cursedly bright eyes. "I know we don't often keep our hatchlings, but --" "But she's the first Primal hatchling of our lair!" interrupted Calbhach. "Can she stay, Preachan? We have so many other hatchlings for other clans to take if they want one." Preachan chuckled and brushed the hatchling's shimmering wing. "Of course we'll keep her, at least until she grows up and decides for herself whether she wants to stay. She's hardly going to be the first hatchling bred for exploration who grows up at home instead." Cliodhna had known Preachan would allow the child to stay -- she had never denied a request from parents who wanted to keep their children before -- but it was still a relief to hear her say as much. She would teach her daughter to hide, among the flashing lights of the Tempest Spire. And when the hatchling was a little older, Cliodhna would explain why it would be so much harder to hide elsewhere. Maybe the hatchling would grow up to decide the outside world was tolerable, or maybe she'd choose one of the many magical methods to change either her eyes or her instincts, or maybe she'd decide to stay tucked away in the Spire forever, but it would be her choice. |
