The Cost of the crown

They had always been in this golden cage, at first they hadn’t even noticed it, they were just so used to it, to the bars pressing down on them and leaving them isolated and alone. Their home village was small, so very small and so filled with superstitious beliefs, pagan rituals to appease gods that didn’t even exist.

The village elder was the one that started it. They hadn’t even opened their eyes, so special eyes, yet fully, when they were snatched from their parents grip and brought away, into a temple that was crumbling and eerily empty. Devote of life.

Chrysanthe was the name they were given, the sound as aloof as their cool elegance, their beauty a subtle one, that still managed to stun others in awe. Then their magic awoke, strong, so very, very strong. They commanded the earth with such ease, the village inhabitants fell to their knees and prayed, tears in their eyes.

They were nothing but a child, yet they were put on a golden throne, draped in beautiful jewelry and heavy silks, forced to sit still for hours on end, while pilgrims prayed feverishly at their feet. Chrysanthe didn’t liked this life but they also didn’t particular disliked it, they were stuck in apathy and detachment from reality, spending their days daydreaming about someone coming and taking them away.

The longing was a strange thing to bloom in their heart. It grew stronger the older they got, shedding the clumsy lankiness of childhood and growing into a person with a cold, yet stunning beauty whose eyes were surrounded by many tiny, golden gems. And even those eyes, who had been so disinterested in their own life, became alive and lit up in confusing joy when a stranger appeared.

They knew this stranger, the name rolling so easily over their lips as if they had known it all along. The first time Chrysanthe opened their mouth during the long hours of sitting and being worshipped, they smiled, stood from their throne and walked through the crowd with barely concealed joy.

The stranger’s name was Welun and he was their beloved. They just knew it, he was the missing piece in their heart, the one to complete them. Magic and Lightning rippled through the air, as Welun did what Chrysanthe had always dreamt of happening. He tore down their golden cage, blasted it open and reached inside, offering his hand to escape. And Chrysanthe took it, without hesitation, following blindly their strange beloved, away from their home who remained in shambles from Welun’s magic.

Chrysanthe smiled, as if Welun had breathed life into their still form that day, their soul one that was precious to Welun and children that were not theirs of the flesh but of spirit, as Chrysanthe didn’t hesitate to welcome the son they knew they had, in a past life, as they kissed the daughter whose mind had been shattered by their first death.

All that counted now was that they were home again, with their real family. Where they belong.
