SHRIEK
"If there’s one thing I like more than justice, it’s those little extra-crunchy praying mantises. Maybe scarves. Justice is a close third."

LJoIMcL.png
“... Long term effects of prolonged exposure to concentrated Shade energy is not yet readily understood by most dragons in scholarly circles, due in part to the fact that any dragon with a shred of common sense would shy away from forcing an individual to undergo such a potentially inhumane experiment. Accidental cases have been noted in unverified eye-witness reports, ranging from personal anecdotes from those claiming to have defected from Shade-worshiping covens to hinterland urban legends citing ‘a friend of a friend.’ Very few first hand accounts exist, and the ones known by mage-scholars come in the form of anonymous journals and field reports, the veracity of which has sparked countless debates.

“The most well known is perhaps the record of an unknown Mirror, watched from afar, who was supposedly ‘hexed’ with Shade energy in the form of a ‘living shadow.’ This dragon, according to observers, gradually began to lose his scales, his skin, and his mind. He eventually vanished without a trace, leaving behind no evidence of his existence, leading some more superstitious folk to hypothesize that he had been ‘seized from Sornieth’ by his cursed silhouette. A far more likely explanation is that said Mirror was sick with a rare form of Wyrmwound Plague and died in solitary, as Mirrors are prone to do.

“Others have professed that, with the proper aptitude and mage-vibrance frequency, that prolonged Shade energy exposure could in fact have an inverse effect than the supposed case of the unknown Mirror, granting the individual incredible longevity and power akin to a deity. These effects have been replicated in small-scale within controlled environments using beastfolk captives, yielding temporary boons and significant side-effects, but nobody has yet to find a willing draconic subject to prove or disprove the hypothesis.”

-- Forbidden Primordial Magicks, Chapter VI

"If you'd asked me this time last year if Shriek would've ever been anything more than the laughing stock of the council, I'd call you a liar. I mean, @*$%, look at her. She’s a walking disaster. But, you gotta admit, there’s a lot of good thoughts and intentions under that idiot smile. Goggles are on straight. Lenses are fogged, though.

“I mean, c'mon. You gotta draw a line somewhere. I know she wants to save everyone and give everything a purpose. Play hero or whatever. Some dragons--some things--are not worth saving, though. Flauros seems fine now, I guess, but I'm very much in the camp that that thing should've been destroyed as soon as her keeper was killed."

HISTORY
Shriek is an oddity in The Abandoned. The free-spirited daughter of Cloudsong nobles, she grew up knowing little in the way of consequence and harboring an inflated sense of self-worth. It surprised nobody in her birth clan when she decided to leave home to start a clan of her own, though only Ramses, her best (and most logical) friend believed in her enough to tag along. Armed only with a sharp wit and a motor mouth, she set out into Sornieth and beguiled her way into followers, power, and prestige... if "beguile" is a code word for "annoying others into giving her what she wants so she'll stop talking."

That said, Shriek has proved an effective leader. Since the establishment of The Outlanders and her settlement in Irthskaar (at the behest of Ramses, a proud Earth dragon himself), she has done a surprising amount of good for The Abandoned. Though her idea of negotiating is to talk louder and longer than everyone else, she has a tenacity and a hands-on approach that other clan leaders lack. While they're content to argue and debate, muster votes and compare notes, Shriek is often the first of her clan to act when the going gets tough. While she is friendly and peppy, her patience is thin; she can only wait so long for the others to take action before she just grabs the reigns herself.

And it is for this reason that Shriek is regarded as something of a hero to many in Irthskaar. When the Not-Dragon attacked and their peers fell by the droves, it was Shriek who found a way to collar the monster and put an end to the bloodshed. When necromantic forces descended upon the canyon to lay waste to the clans within, it was Shriek who fearlessly rode her pet Not-Dragon into battle and paved the way to victory. Even if her decision to keep a pet Shade beast is polarizing (and it's obvious that the Shade-poisoning is taking a toll on her), none can deny that The Abandoned is intact because of Shriek's quick wits and bravery.

Now, if only she'd shut up once in a while.

POTATO
Why Potato? Why not?

One of the many instances of objects becoming animate due to Flauros’ strange aura, Potato is a personal favorite of Shriek’s and one she’s decided to keep around. It doesn’t really do much aside from occasionally vibrate and make odd noises, but Shriek delights in how bizarre it is and wishes that everyone else was excited about the growling houseplant as she is. Sometimes, for no reason, she carries it with her to council meetings, where everyone ignores the snarling spider plant in the corner.

As a result, Potato has become something of an unofficial mascot to The Outlanders, and the source of many inside jokes within The Fifteen. Even if it's not clear whether or not Potato actually feels or thinks or communicates effectively, it's widely regarded as Shriek's advisor, and the more fun-loving members of the council often respond to it as though it can be understood.
