XIOMARA

the astronomer • watches up, and never down

»━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━«
" Distant thoughts become cluttered mind
What is a drop in the ocean?
Far and few but long behind
We’re spun by the heavenly motion
"

Celestial bodies, so far and untouchable. To some, an unbelievable phenomenon yet to others the grounds of religion. Such mindsets were what drew a starry eyed girl to forever cast her heart into the heavens so far out of her reach. Xiomara’s fascination with the sky forever draws her out of touch with the goings of terrestrial life, only bothering herself to pull her head from the clouds when necessary. The astronomer does as she pleases, allowing life to affect her as it wishes. In her mind, regardless of whatever little things happen during their speck of a lifetime, the heavens remain untouched and unbothered.

Of course to some her view on life is quite interesting, the nosy journalist Codex is always pestering her with questions of why and why not. In a way, Xiomara considers them similar, however her fascination with answering her curiosity is far less annoying. She does her best to avoid the persistent pearlcatcher, not wishing to be a case study that he is consistently poking and prodding to discover why she decided to settle under the gaze of the Plagebringer.

“Why here in a place of rot and decay?” He asked, a quill paused expectantly above parchment. “Certainly the Starfall Isles are more suited to-”

“Because.” She answered shortly, twirling a map caliper between her claws.

A beat of uncomfortable silence fell over the two dragons, only the rhythmic ticking of a clock filled the space.

“Too crowded,” Her words stabbed through the awkward air, and her hold on her tool tightened. “Too pompous.”

Of course there are some whose company she finds if not tolerable at least useful. Despite not displaying interest for the mundane around her, when it comes to oddities and collectables Mara always has room for one more. She would never admit it, but a part of her looks forward to seeing what the clan merchant Armistice sets aside for her. Whether it be something useful for her research or something peculiar, the Obelisk always has something to pique her interest. Most of the world interested in the stars resides in the Arcanists’ domain, so whenever the merchant picks up something along her route back into the Scarred Wastelands, it’s habit to swing by Mara’s first.

“From the Astrolodome,” A hint of pride laced in her tone made the Bogsneak raise a brow, turning over the intricate tool in her hands. “Belonged to some old star-seeker, guess medicine was of more use to him.”

“Astounding…” Mara admired. It was quite the trinket, expertly crafted by the hands of those mesmerized just like she was. Setting it on her table, it sat like a little tripod poised on three legs. When turned on, the machine whirred to life to project the solar system onto the surface below.
Without a word, the bogsneak drew a small purse of treasure from her cloak and handed it to the merchant. For such an exchange, Armistice felt no need to count the coins inside, and instead bid her friend farewell to leave her with her new toy.

Out of the few who seek the Astologian’s company, there is one in particular who manages to avert her attention from the heavens, one heartbroken and griefed from his sorrows to the brink of insanity. Xiomara wouldn’t go as far to consider the man a friend, though anyone could clearly see she has a soft spot for him. Malediction sought after her in hopes of finding some guiding light in her knowledge of the stars and their meaning. Though her predictions and tellings she finds do little to ease his guilt and turmoil. Unlike some, her visions are more of deductions than arcane guidance. She reads the stars, and merely interprets.

“Reading into your chart, the stars tell of remorse and regret, but by no means do they indicate it’s your fault,” Warm brown eyes quickly assessed how her words affected the other, though he still waited with baited breath to hear more. She needed to pick her phrasing carefully, she could feel his expectant gaze making her skin crawl.

“Mal,” She let out a breath yet she still felt a weight on her chest. “Let’s call it there for today, the stars can only tell so much in one sitting.” She watched as the figure across from her withdrew from the table, visibly disappointed.

During their frequent sessions, she really didn’t know what she was expecting. Perhaps her words would spark some realisation that his self-inflicting guilt is undeserved, yet she only felt she was continuing to cause his manifestations. Maybe their sessions did more harm than good, though her feelings of pity for the widower overpowered her sense of reason. She would read the stars for him for as long as he asked for their meanings.
