Moving on isn’t something I’m willing to do. Not when she- she’s still here

Loss cuts deep, and cuts heal over time. After years, after years of pain, one can overcome the hurting, cover their scars, and move on. Memories fade from screams to whispers, all the way to silence in all but the quietest rooms. Still- time heals all wounds, anxieties, and fears. As long as you let it.

Now, there are other problems besides loss. Paranoia and fear can come from many sources, including from within; but what happens when the two broken states intersect, when ever-burning gazes come from nowhere and a memory of a ghost hovers over your head? For Malediction, they are one in the same- even when neither really exists.

He was always cowardly even for his species’ standard, always a paling and fearful drake with too many yips and spooks to not be mocked. A born paranoia he’s always carried, Malediction thought himself to be useless and broken, despite the half-kindness of those trying to handle him as he grew up. Forever until he met his mate, he was alone- until he met her, he was a wreck. She soothed him with that ever gentle whispering voice, his heavy breathing and panic forced quiet to hear her muted words. She was trying to save him.

Then she was gone. Tragedy, but who hasn’t heard the story before? Most everyone, actually, who wasn’t there- since Malediction doesn’t talk as if she’s gone, or what happened, or why nobody sees her anymore. How could he talk in the past tense when she’s right there, in the corner behind him? Following him, watching him? Blaming him for what happened, and what he was too afraid to do to stop it? Surely she in that day, in that moment, saw his true colors and hates him for it now.

She whispers in his dreams, and each morning he swears he sees her ghost hovering over the bedding they shared. Even after he burned and replaced it. She follows him every day, and he can feel her anger, her glares, the things she never did in life but could do now- how she must have always wanted to, how she must have always hated him.

Social events feel like a betrayal. How could he pretend to be alright and move on when she still makes him regret, thinking about it over and over and over again? How could he even try to fool the clan mates around him? No, he can’t gather with them for meals- his heart races, his lungs flutter, and he excused himself every time he’s tried. Meals are only between him and her- though, she won’t show herself in the day. Or maybe can’t.

If not even a dinner can be managed, how could he bear to work with other dragons? This is a necessity to life- one can’t just live on their own after all. But a line is drawn between the essential work, and taking charge over others. His clanmates have tried to put him at the head of group tasks, tried to peel him from his shell and discovered his complete panic when looking at those watching eyes and feeling his mate’s freezing tongue pass over the rim of his ear. Whispering, she was always whispering, “You never deserved me, and you don’t deserve them. You are sick and twisted, and if they follow you they will fall like I did. By your claw. By your fault.” She pushes him away from the terrible mistake he would make, trying again after his failure with her. Perhaps it is a mercy.

From the real afterlife; not a ghost, not a spirit and still in love, she watches and wishes she could have done more to save him from his mind, and from the twistings of her it's creating.
