______ The notion of life baffled Sapling. When young, Sapling thought nothing of a higher purpose, nothing of a passage of time. They simply enjoyed what time they were experiencing. Sapling paid no attention to those who moved faster or slower through life. They formed branches with those for as long as they were in Sapling’s life. Most of those branches died quickly and were shed to make room for new ones. Sapling did not mind. Every branch, dead or alive, was a branch that had enriched Sapling’s life.

To Sapling, life was the best gift they had ever received. But Sapling sometimes felt a pang when they found someone new, someone so different. Where were the ones like Sapling? Surely they were not the only one to exist. Sapling’s roots were stronger and longer than many, which made them a good companion, but slow to move and search on their own. Their life was wrapped so tightly around them that Sapling almost missed it--a splinter like them.
