Biography

| ARMASTUS | [♫] Blue Moon Knight
{ Knight to Henrie | He/Him | Bi }

“You are a slave, boy. Start acting like one.”

Slave—an ugly, cruel word that robs one of one’s freedom and spits upon one’s dignity. This is what they called him; this was the only name he knew. At times, he was a number, six, or fifteen, or thirty-two, but always he was “slave”. It slipped so easily from his master’s lips, yet tasted of poison on his own tongue. He did not say it. He did not recognize it.

“Too unruly.”

“Too disobedient.”

“Too violent.”

Good, he thought, even as his master’s whip fell hard against his back, to be admired by you would be my end.

No one ever bought him, no matter how tall, or strong, or handsome he became with age. He would have made someone an excellent laborer, his master’s patrons claimed, if only he were not so stubborn. It was whispered among slavers that there was no king who could make him bow, none that he would serve. His people’s blood was too proud.

Then he met his Charge.

The young drake, timid by nature, approached his master with fidgeting hands. However, when he spoke, it was with the authority of nobility, his decree ringing through the narrow capital streets. “Slaving is outlawed in this kingdom,” he informed curtly. “You will leave our shores, or face justice.”

As his master’s sword was drawn hissing from its sheath, he saw reflected in it his own eyes. Once dull from hardship, they shined now with a new light, the same light that glinted off of the drake’s pale hair. In that moment, he shattered his chains and caught the blade before it could find its mark. Panting, his palm stained crimson, he advanced to claim his master’s life.

It was the drake who stayed his hand. “If this is the vengeance you must take,” he began, “then take it, but do not kill without necessity.”

“If I don’t kill him,” he insisted, “he will enslave another.”

“He broke the law,” the drake said, “and assaulted a prince. He will not see the light of day again.”

“A prince…”

For the first time, he noted the silver circlet resting on the drake’s brow and the fineness of the clothes he wore to match. Yes, this was a prince, everything he had been taught to hate over his long and miserable captive years. Yet he found that he did not hate the prince. In fact, there was nothing he wished more desperately for than to remain at his side.

“What is your name?” the prince asked.

“I don’t have one,” he replied.

“Then I will call you Armastus,” the prince said. “It means ‘love’.”
