Danainae

Danain is a researcher who specializes in magical energy, specifically the kind with an elemental base. He met his wife at the Windsong College of Science, and things hit off pretty quickly. Danain was taking part in his search at the time, and Leppa ended up becoming his charge. He often says he knew she would be the one the moment he set eyes on her, but this is likely exaggeration.

They spent their years as students getting in (mostly Leppa) and out (mostly Danain) of trouble and performing endless experiments. He didn’t have the same relentless love for research as his soon-to-be wife, but was fascinated by all the different subjects she introduced him to. He loved learning alongside her. Danain was also a total jock on the side, and enjoyed martial arts immensely. He was a proud member of the school’s monster-hunting team, and is still in touch with a couple of his old hunting buddies.

While he was never an overly impulsive dragon, Danain has become much more cautious since his time at the WCOS. This is mostly because a expedition for Leppa’s research thesis ended in catastrophe. He was badly hurt and his wings were permanently shredded when the two attempted to collect samples from a gigantic beast. Leppa was devastated, holding herself at fault for his injury, but Danain made sure she knew he never blamed her in the slightest. Even though decades have passed since the incident, he still sometimes catches her staring at his wings with a melancholy expression.

While he was recovering, Leppa recruited friends and teachers to carefully engineer a complicated kite-like prosthetic that could be affixed to what remained of his healing wings. It was made up of sturdy panels of enchanted canvas, connected by flexible strips of metal and bone. It was completely analog, and relied heavily on his own elemental abilities to get him off the ground. The prosthetic wasn’t a perfect substitute for the real thing, but after months of careful practice and training he was able to fly again. He was so giddy after his first flight that he proposed to Leppa on the spot.

The two are still together through thick and thin. He not only defends her as his mate and charge, but also as an impressive font of precious knowledge. He keeps her grounded when her head is in the clouds, and she encourages him to take chances and see beauty in the strangest things. He has grown to adore and fear the spark of inspiration in her eyes in equal measure. Danain may complain about her impulsive nature, but truly he wouldn't have it any other way.

While their daughter is certainly quick as a whip, he's grateful she inherited his more subdued temperament. She has a talent for manipulation that would be worrying if she wasn't such a kind soul. As much as he misses their late night talks, he's glad she stayed behind on the mainland. There's something off about this expedition...
