Memorial Urn
The nature of Sornieth is one of constant change. The landscape, violently divided and changing drastically from place to place forces its inhabitants to adapt to whatever may come. But try as they might, not all who change survive, and some, like the fallen of the ghostlight ruins, are turned to dust and memories.

Tucked in a corner, among the debris of one such clan, a lone defender pledges his life to an eternal struggle, determined to preserve what little remains. Vulpecula. A name, his own, but even so, one that he hasn’t heard in a long, long time. Anyone who knew it already lies beneath his feet, and he doesn’t care to give it to anyone else to say. The era of light and happiness where he lived had already passed after all, and now he walks alone as if dead, carried only by his final resolve.

This ruined land, infested by monsters and spirits alike, seeks to reclaim the home he defends, to return it to twisted nature and dusk. But as long as breath resides in his lungs, he fights, and fights, unendingly and ceaselessly, drawing on his memories of the ones who he loved to push him on. This sacred ground will never be defiled. Even the innocent--other wanderers-- will not be allowed to step even a single foot into his world. He’ll drive them away, with words and spells, whatever might be necessary.
Not everything goes according to plan, though, and sometimes his spells, for whatever reason, don’t work as intended. The twinge of guilt in his heart is real, but he only allows it for a second before he hardens it again and expels them with renewed strength. They aren’t of his world in the end, and when all the chips are down, nothing will come close to taking its place. The lost, the concerned, the curious, all are sent away.

Or at least, that’s what he’d have liked to say. In an ideal universe, he remains a lone defender, to the end of his life, until he’s allowed to join those that he loves so much. But the flesh is weak, and the mind even more so. Before he knows it, he’s accepted, tentatively, a companion at his side. Well, it’s hard to call it a companion. Can you really call something you don’t know a companion? The words it says are incomprehensible, its intentions are ambiguous, and even its species is hard to discern. All he knows is that it passed by one day, and never left.

Maybe… maybe that’s why he can make an exception for it. This thing, Lume, is nothing like his enemies or friends, it’s a third category all on its own, and thus associated with neither good memories or bad. It’s the one neutral thing in his pathetic, lonely life.

Well, and it’s also really good at magic, which is an excellent help in daily life.

Beyond these trivialities of everyday life, when he has enough time for a rare, precious breather, Vulpecula contemplates his future. Not his earthly future-- that’s something he’s already had settled-- but in the life after. More than anything else, he hopes with all of his soul, to be reunited with the lost. Perhaps, on optimistic days, he thinks, he might be able to laugh and talk with them again, as if the nightmare of the past had never happened. On pessimistic days, he can only look forward to the unconsciousness of death to finally put an end to his endless cycle of memory and grief.
