"...though blind, throbbing between two lives..."

After representatives of the peach tree spirits had established themselves in the clan on the island of Prufrock, sea spirits from the surrounding waters showed up and demanded equal representation.

Adrik serves as their leader on land since he technically holds the highest rank, as he was raised a ward of the Empress of the sea spirits. His advancement in her court has been difficult, however, as he was born blind.

When Ransom came to court, she was able to help him devise ways to better cope with his blindness, to the point where he felt comfortable volunteering to lead the party sent to the island of Prufrock. Upon entering the material realm, however, Adrik was astonished to discover that he could see for the first time in his life - though he remains blind in the spirit realm, and he cannot see any spirits in either realm, he can see the entirety of mortal existence...something which has simultaneously delighted and overwhelmed him.

To better communicate with the clan's residents, he assumed the form of a coatl with a poisonous hide to reflect the many shades of water...something he saw for the first time upon entering the mortal realm. Like other sea spirits, he greatly prizes pearls and values jewelry crafted with them.

Little did Adrik know that the mirror his Empress gifted him before he journeyed to the mortal realm would play a role in a prophecy about the return of the monarch of the spirit realm.
