Biography

"I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."

After representatives of the peach tree spirits had established themselves in the clan on the island of Prufrock, sea spirits from the surrounding waters showed up and demanded equal representation.

Though her parents were both spirits, Ransom was born in the world of dragons, hatched in a nest in the Tangled Woods where her parents were hiding from their superiors who hunted them. A moon spirit and an underworld spirit, they had run away together and hid themselves in the material realm, hoping to evade their angered Queen and Lord. The only member the clan who knew of their identity was a ridgeback who had been banished from his former home in the Sea of a Thousand Currents after being falsely accused of theft.

Though the ridgeback guarded their secret well, they could not hide forever, and eventually some of the best trackers of Lord Lazarus located them. In desperation, her parents asked the ridgeback to take their daughter and flee, then entered into battle with the hunters who were destroying the clan's dragons to get at the fugitives. Even the ridgeback did not escape unscathed, but Ransom's presence went undetected. She was loathe to leave her parents and allow the clan of her birth to be savaged, but the ridgeback was stronger than she was as a hatchling, and he carried her off and away, reaching the sea before collapsing and succumbing to his wounds, which were too severe for her fledgling spirit abilities to heal.

Ransom had no time to mourn her friend's death or to imagine what might be happening to her parents and her former clan. Her instinct told her to hide, so she dove into the waters, passing into the spirit realm, where she mingled among sea spirits. Her parents had taught her how to disguise her aura, as her own was unique, neither fully underworld or moon. She had developed quite a talent for it, and in the material realm made her aura seem as that of a dragon. Among the sea spirits, she changed her aura to match theirs, so they accepted her as one of their own.

As her powers grew, she progressed in rank among them, eventually ending up in the court of the Empress herself. She was assigned to accompany and assist the blind ward of the Empress, a sea spirit named Adrik. Wary at first and unsure if her camouflaged aura would fool a blind dragon, she soon became fond of his perseverance and dignity despite his disability and with the blessing of the Empress herself became his mate.

When Adrik expressed a desire to lead the diplomatic mission to the island of Prufrock in the mortal realm, Ransom supported it, longing to see the land of her birth again and perhaps receive word of her parents. However, she was mortified when she learned that Queen Mahdis of the moon spirits and Lord Lazarus of the underworld spirits - the very spirits her parents had angered with their union and elopement and the cause of the disagreement between their realms - would be on the same island. She was twice as careful in maintaining the disguise of her aura and did her best to avoid the feuding spirit leaders, hoping that she would escape their notice and somehow survive this - not only for her own sake, but because she feared Adrik and her other sea spirit friends would face repercussions for "hiding" her. She was surprised when two skydancers, calling themselves Midnight and Sun, were brought before the moon Queen and the underworld Lord, claiming to be reincarnations of her parents; she was further surprised when the monarchs permitted them to live out their lives as mortals in peace. With the resolution of the rift, she was finally able to reveal her true nature to the spirits around her. Though Adrik was disappointed that she had never told him the truth, he understood the reason for her deception. She was also able to briefly reunite with her parents before they departed to live out their mortal lives together.
