Altair
strange merchant genial • charismatic • untrustworthy /notes/ » mild kleptomaniac » estranged from many of his siblings » lone traveler from night-market to night-market » specializes in snake oil and cursed artifacts »━━━━━━━━━━━› code by epher #101073 |
A pale spiral alighted with a weary thud at the outpost, shaking sand off of his wings. A few vendors looked up halfheartedly. The place was as forlorn as a scrap of tumbleweed blown in from the west wind and just as dull. Only a few travelling merchants retained any semblance of cheer; everything else was muffled by dust and ghosts. He ordered a questionable looking dinner at a pie cart and joined a sputtering campfire to eat and consult his maps. It was only when he choked on something unexpectedly crunchy that he heard a little snicker to his right. He glared pointedly at the shape of a skydancer outlined in the dark before peering apprehensively into the contents of his pie. "Best not to think too hard about what goes into those," said the skydancer. He was dressed in extravagant jewelry and had strange eyes, but seemed friendly enough. A sort of wry vitality emanated from him as he chuckled and offered him a flask of cheap mead. Ah, one of the merchants, then. They sat in the firelight, exchanging names and talk and drink. The hour grew late before the spiral realized that all others had departed. There was a sudden taste of something bitter and sharp, not quite masked by the honeyed wine. Altair watched calmly as the spiral writhed and crumpled into the sand, eyes widened with fright as he struggled against the paralytic. "Hush," he said to the twitching form, "This won't take a moment." Scenarios of dark sorcery, of being robbed blind, of being dissected for parts and then buried under shifting sands raced through the spiral's mind, but the other simply hummed as he plucked at the jewels adorning his wrists. "I think this'll do," he said conversationally as he leaned down and slid a heavy ring off of his claw with an ominous magical crackle. "There. That one's your problem now." The band of gold burned bright and cold into his skin as the other dragon departed into the land of dust and ghosts.

The delicate clink of murky bottles jostling against each other; the rustle of a plumage so red it is almost brown; the hushed whispers of a deal conducted in the shadows. Fair is fair. Eyes like candles, bright and burning, and a voice like mulberry wine. Pay attention, won't you? He traded his soul away a long time ago. Be careful what you bargain for.
