Hwadam was once an ordinary dragon. An outsider but also a Mirror, he was one of the first to be accepted by progenitor AzZhubin onto his territory. His years and experience made him a keen source of wisdom for the fledgling tribe.

That was, until him and AzZhubin's mate Eirostle got into a disagreement. The details of the disagreement no one knows; but it left Eirostle in critical condition and Hwadam ripped to shreds by AzZhubin in a fit of rage.
Both dragons were moved deep within the caves of the Sanctuary, to the warmest and the most sheltered alcoves. Newcomer & outsider Ara, from the lands of shadow, was tasked with overseeing their recovery and well-being, having demonstrated proficiency as a hedge witch.

Ara recognized a peer in Audemus when he arrived: a fellow Skydancer with a knack for healing. What many didn't realize was that Audemus' area of expertise was very specifically in Necromancy--an arcane art largely frowned upon by the superstitious. Ara didn't mind, and kept Audemus' talents a secret. There wasn't much need for necromancy, and so he didn't exercise his abilities. They were a tool, not a defining character trait.
When Audemus' first litter were brought into the world and their mother was mysteriously stricken ill, Ara became something of an adoptive mother to the two children, helping Audemus when he was overwhelmed and struggling with his mental health (a battle he had been fighting since Ara first met him, that only worsened after Anne).

Aulus, Audemus' daughter, attached herself to Ara; her interest in her father's occupation and field of magic fostered a strong relationship between the two.
Audemus mentored Aulus in the basics of necromancy in secret, with explicit orders not to delve deeper and not to share that secret with anyone. But Aulus was determined to test it out and demonstrate her skill as a medic and mage. And so she set her sights on Hwadam, intrigued by the mystery surrounding his coma and wanting a challenge in having to not just resuscitate a dragon, but also to almost reconstruct their whole body.

It doesn't take much to assume the results did not end up quite as expected. Hwadam was a Frankenstein, a beast, not truly alive nor dead but somewhere in between; with an incomprehensible intelligence that left him more or less a meat puppet. Ara was furious with Aulus and banished her from the Ward and from the profession of healer as a whole. Audemus agreed in her judgement, although he accepted some responsibility in teaching her about necromancy in the first place.

These days, Hwadam serves as Ara's assistant in the Ward, carrying out simple tasks. She refuses to leave him in the care of Aulus the Witch, and in a way he's become something of a son to her—if simply for pity's sake.
