the eldest son was something of an anomaly. at least, he himself likes to think he is anyways.

he truly loves and respects familial ties. when he came of age he even found a way to contribute to the alcove — so far in his life, he has adhered to the upholding the peace as is expected of those from his family.

his contribution is just, on the unorthodox side.

santonilyo isn't a shining paragon of all things good and moral as the rest of his kin. lying came easily to him, fighting dirty a tactic he had no qualms with. traits that had to be curbed by his elder sisters and mother, or so they thought.

(he just learned how to be more discreet in his methods. he was never one for abrasive displays, and was always taken by the allure of pulling strings in the background.)

upon his coming of age he chose to uptake a position of being groundskeeper, tending to the outside territories of the alcove and nobody batted an eye. he always had a talent for nurturing plant life and his mother's patience to see it through, so they let him be.

when he occasionally poked his head into kalabasa's office to help with paperwork regarding imports and the merchants that would bring them in, it was seen as sweet brotherly affection and encouraged. when he began to be seen in quiet conversation with the clan reverence liaison, it was marked as odd but mostly ignored.

but when it was revealed he has been slipping incredibly detailed and accurate reports of 'dragons of interest' to Le Belvedere, his family began to put the pieces together and caught on to the bigger picture.

not that they can do anything about it. santonilyo already had a sprawling network throughout the alcove's territories. by then, the eldest son has become the spymaster he was aiming to become all along.

his parents had a talk with him regarding the secrecy he's maintained, and he was prepared for them to reprimand him and command his unethical activities to cease – only to be pleasantly surprised that they were simply disappointed he didn't trust them to tell them.

( "we just want you safe," his mother said softly, and he had bowed his head further to avoid the sadness in her eyes at having been lied to for so long, "you could have been hurt in this path you chose. I am proud of your success, my little Toni, we all are.

I just wish you told us sooner." )

he grew up having had kept a pretense with everybody he met, from white lies to lies of omission to outright twisted truths — all beautiful falsities that come to him so naturally, as he delivers them with what he knows is an irresistible smile.

but after that day he learned to ease up and realize that he can rest around his family.
(after that day his determination to be the best at what he does had increased tenfold, now seeing what can be lost should he fail.)
