Polperu watched as her mother seemed to inspect her new pearl with pride, heart nearly shattering along with the pieces as she watched her most prized possession be crushed right before her very eyes. Trying to grasp one of the biggest pieces, she clung onto the small shard like a lifeline as she was pushed over near the rest of her siblings.

Betu silently ushered the pearl-less clutch into one of the long-abandoned stone buildings. In the distance, dissonant roars, explosions, and terrified screams almost constantly filled the air. It sounded as if the many-headed monster was coming right for them. What felt like an eternity passed before Betu moved for the door, countering the frightened hatchlings' protests and pleas with, "I'm just going to take a look and then we'll run." She cried and cried as the Emperor came closer, fear striking her heart like a lit fire striking against wood, a worry embedded into her heart. Running and flapping away as best as her little hatchling body could, she clutched onto the large fragment of pearl she managed to salvage and simply wanted to get away from this place.

Next thing she knew was darkness.

After darkness was sparks of hope, after the sparks was stone as far as she could see. A land full of seemingly nothing but rock surrounded her, and she couldn't help but want to find something soft to cling to. Or something round, in place of a pearl. What she found was a suitable round stone that she figured would work as a base, spitting the dark memory goo around the stone as she smoothed it out. It wasn't exactly a pearl—far from one as good as her first, most definitely—and yet good enough for her to treasure as her pearl nonetheless. This was her new pearl, built from her new home, and she hoped better times were to come.
