His parents regaled his clutch with tales passed down from their ancestors and Rafiel listened with bright eyes. He never forgot a word, holding them close to his heart, later inspiring his passion for storytelling. As soon as he was old enough Rafiel sought a mentor. He wasn’t sure at the time what he wanted- only that he wanted to commemorate his family’s traditions. This goal carried him into an inn one night, where he was entranced by the performance of a local bard. The fate-like encounter solidified Rafiel’s path in life and he cornered the bard after the show to ask for mentorship. The bard conceded to teach him their craft on the condition that Rafiel accompanied the bard abroad, something Rafiel eagerly agreed to. For years Rafiel and his mentor traveled from place to place, stopping only briefly in each town to perform and collect new tales. Unfortunately, his mentor unexpectedly passed away due to a fast-acting disease, leaving Rafiel stranded by himself. Luckily for Rafiel the clan the duo had been playing for at the time offered Rafiel a place to stay. At first, reluctant to continue to play with the sudden death of his closest friend, Rafiel refused. When the Diverque Sanctuarium instead offered him the role of scout to help deal with a neighboring harpy clan, Rafiel relented and took the position, hoping to distract himself from the grief. Rafiel trained hard to become an exemplary scout with the help of another scout, Luna Skyheart. He found joy in reconnaissance, watching the enemy and putting his keen memory to good use. Life as a scout was not without risks. Many times Rafiel was spotted and chased by swift harpies who, when they managed to get close enough, left deep wounds to remember them by. On these days Rafiel would escape and be sent to the Sanctuarium’s only trained healer, a similarly aged female known as Ruby. Every time Rafiel found himself before Ruby he earned himself a weary lecture about his lack of caution when dealing with harpies. The worried fussing, as Rafiel dubbed it, did nothing to dissuade him. It did however give him a chance to bask in the world-weary healer’s attention, where he could regale her in revitalized tales of his exploits and travels. Despite her seemingly discouraging words, Rafiel could tell that Ruby secretly enjoyed his stories and that it eased her earned weariness. Even after the Harpy Raids ended and there was no need for a scout, Rafiel stuck around the Sanctuarium. He gradually took up playing again as time went on, accepting that his mentor would want him to continue to play. Even as he fulfilled the role of bard once more, Rafiel refused to leave the Sanctuarium. He had another reason to stay- and that reason was Ruby. He took time to invite her away from her clinic, alleviating her stress and getting a chance to know her better. When he let his admiration of her become obvious, Rafiel was relieved that she reciprocated his advances, courting her until Ruby approved of becoming permanent fixtures in each other's lives. Current Life Rafiel continues to be the Sanctuarium’s bard even as it grows larger, performing on stages and in establishments when requested. Occasionally, when the Sanctuarium needs one, he’ll play the role of scout. When not performing or scouting, Rafiel enjoys randomly helping others find passion in musical arts and will do on-the-spot sessions with anyone seeking to learn an instrument before directing them to a licensed educator. |
