Birthplace:

Maelstrom, like most Mirrors, grew up in a pack, but unlike most Mirrors, he never left the pack of his birth. He was known for his undying loyalty to his pack, no matter who came and went, family or friends alike, he always stayed. Furthermore, he put the most effort possible into maintaining the welfare of his comrades, though he preferred to not be assisted in order for his packmates to not have any trouble. Taking on the most dangerous prey and combating the most menacing of monsters, even if he ended up brutally mangled in the process was something he eventually became famous for in Mirror circles around the Sunbeam Ruins. "Foolhardy Young Maelstrom" he was called by many.
Shortly before his pack was about to migrate, Maelstrom brazenly instigated a battle against a group of Serthis that had been antagonistic to his packmates during their stay in the area, hoping to stop them in their tracks before they could cause further trouble to the pack. In the process, he managed to defeat two of the Serithis when the last one, a serpentine sorcerer, gravely wounded him with a powerful bolt of magic. Maelstrom expected for him to be finished off as he felt his strength leave him, but much to his surprise, he came to in the lair of two dragons, an older Coatl named Estelline and a young adult Tundra named Melusine. While the Mirror was unconscious, they had tended to his wounds, and though he was still in great pain and still had to stay a while until he could fully recover, they very well may have saved his life. In spite of his gratitude, Maelstrom mostly kept to himself and didn't bother trying to learn more about his rescuers other than they were master and apprentice.
Within a matter of weeks, however, Maelstrom had left the two dragons and returned to his pack (after some wandering since they had left the area while he was gone). It was only a matter of time, however, when he yet again bit off more than he could chew by attempting to slay a Featherback Boar in order to rid the territory of a great threat, only to get a thorough helping of tramplings and tusks.
Yet again, much to his surprise, Estelline and Melusine came to his aid and healed him, by chance or fate, he knew not, nor did he care, he was just glad that someone helped him (embarrassing as it was considering these dragons had seen him in a sorry state, before). During this particular stay, he grew something of an acquaintance with the Coatl's apprentice, as, though she had forgotten him briefly, upon a quick refresher of how they had met previously, she made the connection that his wounds, while they were gained through reckless behavior, were not signs of savagery or vainglory, but because he cared so deeply for his pack. While flattered, Maelstrom still left the instant he could run, again.
And the cycle repeated itself again, and again, and again, and again. Every time Maelstrom fell in battle, the Coatl and the Tundra would rescue him and heal him, hovering over him like Guardian Angels. After a while, he learned much about both characters, that Estelline was abandoned by her parents due to her paler plumage being considered a bad omen, and due to this aesthetic-based injustice, she wished for a brighter, better world filled with kindness and love instead of pride and dread as she had experienced so much around other dragons. Melusine, though, had forgotten much of her life, being a Tundra and such, and all she knew was that she was now Estelline Mornrose's student, her curious mind fascinated by the misty-colored Coatl's ideals and her pure heart genuine in her desire for a gentle, amicable society. Maelstrom couldn't deny that he was very interested in this goal, already wishing to protect his pack at all costs. As he grew to befriend the two dragons more and more, a part of him wished to become Estelline's protege alongside Melusine, however, his pack called, and he promptly returned. Even so, Maelstrom regularly visited the two, keeping close tabs on them. Meanwhile, he applied what he had learned from the philosophers who rescued him so often to his daily life, staying behind to take care of the sick and injured pack members who couldn't keep up until they could recover and rejoin and accepting help from other packmates so long as he could help them in return, as well as frequently sharing his prey instead of instinctively wolfing it down.
Then he had heard that the Coatl known as Estelline had gone missing, immediately dropping everything to return to his dear friend Melusine's side as she both despaired and pondered what she should do next in order to comfort her. Upon the conclusion that Melusine should start a clan in order to pass down the values and virtues she had learned from her mentor, Maelstrom, with a heavy heart, decided to leave his pack in order to help her make this endeavor work out.
Since then, Maelstrom had fallen for Melusine's gentle, tender heart, fervent desire for peace, her generosity, and the wisdom she had gained. She is a true treasure to him, and he would stop at nothing to protect her. Should monsters or Beastclans attack the tribe and she get hurt, Maelstrom drops his calm, respectful behavior and goes into a violent frenzy to put an end to whoever dared cause the Tundra harm.
While he misses his pack dearly, he feels his true home is with the Morning Rose Tribe, now, channeling his protective impulses into defending his clan from enemies as well as hunting down monsters and truly wicked dragons who have caused other clans harm. This is not without it's downfalls, as he still remains reckless, and he can be distrusting towards strangers until he thoroughly gets to know them and determine for himself if their intentions are good or not. His skepticism towards the Plague and Shadow flights has diminished very much since the alliance forged between the Morning Roses and the nearby Librio Sect of the Shadow flight.
One trait Maelstrom is well known for other than his famously vigilante tendencies is how he is quite the doting father. He has been very loving to his children, pretty close to spoiling them, and has supported them greatly in whatever endeavors they have pursued, minus Feray's rebellion and outright abandonment of the tribe, of which he was very distraught. The most famous example is his relationship with Audra the Brave, the youngest child of his second brood, as she closely followed in his footsteps to become a proper protector of the tribe, aspiring to be a protector of the whole flight as she greatly lionizes the patron of the Light flight. Maelstrom is very proud of Audra, especially now that she goes forth to honor the Light flight as a whole by fighting for Dominance.
