cato's parents had stayed long with the order of runes, way back since it was ran out of hellreek's screaming halls. hellreek is gone now, and the order has long been wandering. cato's parents have had many children, and many of them couldn't handle the magic that got passed down to them. they either went insane with the visions, the knowledge of all things to come, or their bodies hardened to crystal until they died. for decades, kronos and cybele didn't hatch any children. they wanted them, wanted to teach them their sacred ways, but they were scared. what if they lost another clutch? what if, once more, the gods were anything but merciful?

they were in ice when they had their next clutch. so far from the lands of the arcanist, surely their children would be spared? but in the midst of war, magic was not contained to mere borders. they came out just as they always did; pleading, begging for it to stop.

and then there was cato.

he was the biggest. his sister was a spiral, but his brother was a ridgeback as well. cato dwarfed him by several feet, spines reaching to carve at the sky. when he hit adolescence, his parents watched him for any signs of magic, and they got one.

just like his mother, magic seeped from his skin and wrapped him up, covering, solidifying, but it did not render him immobile. the ice that covered him made an armor that has yet to be broken by anything, without taking away any of his mobility. he still learned to fight. he could still fight the shade, without even the threat of being infected.

despite cato being an absolute brute of a dragon, able and willing to take down an army of shade without a second thought, he is surprisingly mild in temperament. he is calm, and eagerly thinks things through, not one to rush into anything particularly quickly. he doesn't show much emotion, but there's enough evidence of him being soft in personality, enjoying poetry and reading.

on the other hand, he is a quick and efficient killing machine, and he does show a certain amount of bloodlust on the battlefield. he has the most experience banishing the shade, and because of his size, he was bestowed a massive claymore by the runeforger to wield.
