Humble Loser
Considered Victoria's rival. He always loses to her. He was invited to join this lair specifically to lose to Victoria. Everyone was so tired of constantly competing with her in anything they did, they decided to finally do something about it. And dragged someone else in to lose to her all the time. At first, Perdo was hesitant about his new role, confused why he had to lose. But after meeting Victoria, he understood the sacrifice that was necessary, the lair desperate. It proves his strength of will that he always loses for her, though his normal, sentient inclination is to win. The first time Victoria ever noticed him, he accidentally won a race. Prior to him stumbling over the finish line to his utter surprise, having just watched Victoria trip over a random familiar that had darted out in front of her feet, Victoria never once acknowledged his existence. She would speak to him, tell him the rules of whatever she intended to do, gloat that she'd won, but she'd never really looked at him until the moment he crossed the crack in the ground she'd designated as the finish line. He hadn't meant to cross before her, but she'd tripped right before the end. Surprised, he'd frozen. In that moment, Victoria gave him the coldest, darkest look he'd ever seen in his life. The kind of look that replaced his blood with ice and stopped the air in his lungs. Quick thinking saved him. He insisted on a rematch because the familiar had sabotaged her. She agreed, and won spectacularly. Since then, he'd neither won, nor experienced that terrifying look again, and he prefers things that way. |
In typical me-fashion, I'm toying with the idea of making Perdo go insane constantly losing to Victoria, but for now, he's new enough to the job, and it's his only job, he can tolerate it. There will probably be a bumpy time after a few months where he struggles with continuing on, then he'll find a level patch where he balances his innate desire to win, as most conscious beings experience, with his strength-of-will to allow Victoria to win. And then after a year or two, he'll have accidentally slipped into insanity without realizing it. |
