______Highly exciteable, curious, and energetic, Beetle is the embodiment of these little strange creatures. They have a simple mind, a simple outlook on life, and a simple way of solving problems, though perhaps a little twisted. What they see as fine and completely normal, to other dragons it may come across as strange, alien, or even aggressive and repulsive.

Beetle is very unlike other dragons, after spending so much time in the wild, studying and befriending all sorts of creatures out of pure yet a little obsessive interest, the storm of the elements has changed them. Now they look a little bug-like themselves, and developed similar mannerisms too.

There are stories told about them. Bards and travellers retell tales of crossing paths with such an insect-like creature, and they all are told to be a sign of luck and fortune. Seeing Beetle in the wild is told to bestow blessings to your travel. Rumours also say this creature is immortal, and following it will grant you a gift you may not refuse, for if you do great evil will halt your journey.

“Sorriiin, where are we?” A rather tired Mirror whined. They were speaking to their travelling partner, a Gaoler. Sorin took a moment to pause and take in his surroundings. A peaceful boreal forest with dozens of little creatures skittering about the snow and leaving trails behind. There was a long pause, and the Mirror grew progressively more exasperated. “Don’t tell me… You spaced out again and started following the trails of shade in the area. We’re supposed to be heading to the hot springs on vacation…” Sorin looked embarrassed. It was his idea in the first place to steal his friend Sakura away from training and take them out somewhere to relax for the day. While the forest looked lush as ever for the season, today was the winter solstice and there would only be a few hours of sunlight left in the day. The hot springs along the inactive volcanoes were only open as long as the sun was in the sky. They didn’t have time to lolligag any longer.
“I’m sorry Sakura… Sometimes it just happens.” He apologized and adjusted his pack before turning his back to his friend. “Hop on. As an apology I’ll carry you the rest of the way. You must be exhausted from training so much anyhow.” He couldn’t see Sakura, but smiled at the sound of relief and delight they made as they hopped on him. “M-mind the shardflank!” He warned in alarm as Sakura climbed incredibly fast. His body untensed when he felt Sakura’s maw lean against the fluff of his neck.
“Don’t be silly, Sorin. I’d never accidentally stab myself against your spikes.” Sakura’s long tail coiled around a collection of Sorin’s spiky protrusions and he knew that was the most comfortable position for them. Sorin grinned.
“Yes, I suppose. I still worry though.” The added weight of a dragon never seemed to bother Sorin as he headed out into the woods, finally following the map to the hot springs.

~*~

Perched atop the highest Birch trees of the forest, there was a strange sort of dragon nibbling on the leaves of the tree with several insect friends. One of their beetles crawled up over the dragon’s shoulder, spotting something in the distance. The dragon craned their head to follow their friend with a curious hum. “Now what do we have here, Luci? Two little dragons wandering nearby? Ooh… Maybe we should introduce ourselves.” They hushed their friends as the voices of the pair came into earshot.
“Are you sure this is the way to the hot springs…? Everything looks the same!” That was the Mirror.
“I’m sure. I’ve done this trek hundreds of times before.”
“Gee Sorin… your Gaoler memory thing is kinda freaky you know? I would have forgotten this place after a day.” Sorin chuckled. How sweet. They must be taking their friend over for a good time. Luci crawled up to the dragon’s head and bounced once. They smiled.
“Good idea! Let’s play a game with them, shall we?” And they unfurled their wings, silently travelling from tree to tree to get a better look.

~*~

Sorin and Sakura fell into a comfortable silence as they tread onward. The scent of water filled the Gaoler’s nostrils and he picked up the pace, skating along the snow without alerting the forest animals, just as his breed was known for. “Nearly there now!” He felt Sakura shift along his fluffy braids, excitement building in their legs and ready to pounce into the water. They were so close Sorin could nearly taste-!
“Not so fast!” Above the pair, the trees shifted strangely, and Sorin grabbed Sakura to shield them behind his body before the rustling leaves jumped down to the frosty ground. It took only a moment for his eyes to adjust to what he saw. A… pearlcatcher? The dragon’s unnatural design skewed what once appeared to be one of the Lightweaver’s children, and that ruffled Sorin even more. The dragon sat down in front of the pair before shooting a bemused smile in their direction. “I won’t hurt you buuut, I wanted to see what two careless dragons were doing encroaching on my territory.”
“Wait… You live here? But Sorin said…” The mirror looked confused at her friend. Sorin snorted.
“This land was claimed to protect rare species, it is not what can be owned.” The dragon in front of them giggled.
“And who do you think protects all the rare species that enter the reserve? Certainly not Icewarden!” Sorin’s jaw unclenched and he relaxed.
“I see. May we pass then? We have no interest in collecting or consuming anything on this land. I just want to show my friend the hot springs after a long day of training with their commander.” The strange-scaled dragon nodded agreeably.
“Of course! Only if you pass my riddle.” There was a visible groan from Sorin.
“A riddle? You’ve got to be kidding me. We have just a few hours before sundown! And sundown means we can’t be stepping foot in this protected land.” His disgruntled, almost childish complaint brought the dragon before them to laugh. A beetle emerged from the pearlcatcher’s mane, hopping onto their shoulder and hopping up and down a few times. Immediately, ignoring the annoyed Gaoler, the two shared a silent conversation of clicks and chirps before the dragon eventually nodded.
“Yes! It’s very simple though, trust me. Luci here is your riddle. She’s going to hide somewhere in the expanse of the reserve and all you have to do is find her! Then I will escort you myself to the best hot spring on the reserve.” Sakura squinted at the beetle.
“But… wait! The entire reserve? That’s so big we’ll never find Luci in time!” The beetle flew off somewhere while the two dragons’ panic levels were rising.
“Good luck!” Sorin charged first, following the bug into the boreal birch trees. Sakura scrambled behind, catching up quickly due to Sorin’s paws and tail steamrolling the snow out of the way. The dragon giggled as they watched the pair go. “I know you can do it.” And then flew back into the sheltered canopy of the trees, nearly turning invisible from their perfect camouflage.

~*~

“I LOST HER!” Sorin shouted, tail lashing out angrily behind him. Sakura patted the furious Gaoler’s left front paw soothingly. Eventually, Sorin exhaled loudly, shoulder blades slouching. “I didn’t even get a good enough scent on her, I’m noseblind in this forest… Sorry Sakura.”
“Silly Sorin, don’t apologise or give up yet. We’ll find a way. And if your nose can’t find the bug… hmm… maybe we can attract it to us?” Sorin’s ears flicked back up to attention at the idea.
“That’s a great idea! Give me a moment.” Using his nose to scout for things he did know, Sorin moved across the snow in a snake-like pattern. He weaved from side to side in the clearing they found themselves in until, at last, he caught the scent of something. Using his powerful claws, Sorin dug at the snow until he reached the soil underneath. And in the soil, fresh greens were the reward for his work. He gripped the grass in his maw before pulling it out, roots and all, with a single strong pull.
“What’s that for? A snack?” Sakura inquired, glancing at the supple roots attached to the grasses. Sorin opened a small woodbasket he carried with him with a deft claw, depositing the find inside.
“It’s bait. Any hungry insects nearby would flock to this nutritious source of food. Especially in this climate. It would be too cold normally to sustain a beetle.” Sakura nodded, various awed sounds coming from them. Sorin adjusted the pack before lowering his antlers to Sakura’s level. “Hop on, we’re going to romp through the forest. It’ll be faster than just walking around blindly.” Sakura didn’t need to be told twice and gripped one of Sorin’s strong antlers before he hauled them onto his back.
“Let’s go then!” The romp was short lived, however, as Sorin stopped upon finding a sort of graveyard of fallen trees. Wood on these trunks was picked away and rotted by the freezing and warming of the forest, and the scent of the wood was strong enough that Sorin was sure bugs would be attracted to this area. Sakura hopped off, offering to scout around one end as Sorin looked over the other digging for more greens to add to the basket. The more food there was, certainly the further bugs could be attracted from. The plan was sure to work, and soon the Gaoler believed. A small look of triumph crossed his face as he picked up another batch, and then it turned into a frown when he saw the dragon that sent them on this nonsense riddle-quest eating from his basket. They met his eyes and smiled.
“This is really good! Wherever did you find such delicious greens? What is it called?” Sorin yoinked the basket from the pearlcatcher with a huff, shutting it closed with a paw.
“Beetle grass. And it is not for you.” The name made them giggle.
“Silly, beetle grass doesn’t exist!” Sorin rolled his eyes, choosing to ignore the mention that somedragon who looked so insect-like was eating from it and reducing the argument to nothing in the first place.
“Naturally in the wild, no. It’s a concoction created by my people to attract food for insect-eaters that accompany us on journeys to bring order to Sornieth. It is mixed with natural herbs and spices that are at the bottom of this basket to enhance the attractive flavor. And it seems to work, judging from you showing up out of NOWHERE.” On cue, Sorin craned his neck to see Sakura coming in from scouting. They looked a little surprised at seeing the dragon beside Sorin, but just walked over to their friend instead.
“No signs of buggos on that end of the place, Sorin.” He nodded.
“Thanks for checking for me. I guess we have to look elsewhere.” He stood up, ready to walk off somewhere else, before the uninvited dragon stopped them.
“Hey, if you give me that beetle grass, I could… maybe give you a clue?~” They chirped. Sorin and Sakura looked at one another, nodding. Sorin removed the basket from his possession in offering to the stranger. They excitedly exclaimed, nibbling on the grass now that it was theirs. After having their fill, they looked back up to the duo. “You did say it was too cold for some insects to live above ground for too long, correct? Soo… why are you looking in cold places? They need to regulate their body temperature somehow, and the snow does them no favors. But that’s it for me, I’ll see you around if you find Luci!” And they flew off, with the basket in their arms.
“How did you know I said… HEY BRING BACK MY BASKET!!!!!” Sorin roared, stomping his foot when they didn’t even look back. “What a bother…”
“At least they gave us a hint… right?” Sorin turned his attention back to Sakura, nodding softly.
“That they did. But, the only place that isn’t frozen right now is probably twenty feet below us. I surely can’t dig that far with so little daylight left.” The two sat in thoughtful silence for a moment, before Sakura piped up,
“THE HOT SPRING! It’s warm, grass grows around it since the snow has melted nearby, and the dry rocks are full of heat.” Sorin’s eyes grew wide at the answer. It was so obvious but the thought never crossed his mind to actually just check there, and it was the closest source of warmth from when that dragon showed up to stop them. Sorin leapt to his feet with a Skydancer’s grace in that moment.
“Hop on, let’s go let’s go!” Once Sakura was situated, Sorin steamrolled over towards the location of the hot spring he knew by heart. And right when they pushed through the final layer of woodland, his sharp eyes noticed a particular bug lounging lazily on a rock. He smirked. “We FOUND YOU, LUCI!” Luci hopped up at the sound of her name, scurrying across the heated rocks before finally buzzing over to Sorin’s snout. There it rested, snuggling into his warm fur. If he wasn’t so done with today, he would have found it endearing. “Alright, you. Go find your friend, Sakura and i are going to enjoy the hot spring as much as we can before we’re kicked out by Icewarden’s regulations.” Appearing to understand Sorin, Luci hopped off him and disappeared from sight. Sakura looked up at Sorin for encouragement.
“We can just… go in then?” The Gaoler nodded.
“I have a feeling that the dragon knows and Luci will deliver the message for us. Hop in Sakura, you earned it.” There was an immediate splash that soaked Sorin’s fur to the bone with a tidal wave of thermal water. His fur fell over his eyes and he couldn’t see. He could hear Sakura’s laughter, though. Sorin smirked, only his teeth showing due to his sopping fur. “Oh really now?!” Sorin backed up a few steps, until the soft sensation of grass was replaced by the nipping cold of the snow, and ran towards Sakura in the spring. Sakura screamed playfully as Sorin canonballed into the water with them. Shaking his head, Sorin finally ruffled the fur enough for him to see a still-shocked Sakura, who was smiling brightly. “There. Now we’re both wet. How does the water feel, Sakura?” Sakura didn’t answer as they laid their head against the rocks radiating warmth. That was all the confirmation Sorin needed to see if this trip was worth it. And, he will admit, the entire riddle situation was quite fun. He almost wanted to find them again to ask for a name.

~*~

Back in the trees, Beetle was watching Sorin and Sakura enjoy the hot spring with a smile. Luci crawled up to the dragon’s shoulder to watch as well. “They were nice dragons, and Sorin was quite entertaining to tease, wasn’t he?” Luci hopped in agreement, before chittering something only Beetle could understand. They giggled.
“Naw… don’t worry. Nothing bad will happen if I keep the sun risen for just a little while longer. They deserved it, especially after that delicious grass!”
