╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮

"Perhaps the world was not meant solely to be seen from the ground."

- LEAR QUICKFLIGHT -

╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯

The sky darkens, the clouds gather as if for a storm, and Lear can be seen preparing for a flight. His official job in the clan is that of a courier, but this is only a front for his true passion. Lear is a dragon whose wings carry his soul in their expanse; he is only happy with the wind pushing through his fur and chill of the clouds leaving their dew on his skin. Eyes watering from the wind and lungs fighting the thinness of the air, his body is alive with panic and exhilaration as he wonders Will I touch the moon tonight? Will I greet the stars as brothers?

Of course he knows that such feats are beyond mortals, but that seems a poor reason to halt his dreaming. In the end, he descends and lets his wings carry him where they will. He discovers hidden away places in the peaks of mountains and witnesses the masterpiece of a sunset sky seen from high up in the world. If more dragons were brave enough to ascend into the clouds as Lear does, perhaps they would find the same madness in the skies that he does.

When he is on the ground, Lear holds an immensely important duty: he is the heir to the throne. He is distantly related to Lady Wardancer, but while he made no attempt to capitalize on this connection, Fethryn nonetheless made Lear his heir. He knows that his aunt and uncle, as he calls them, have lost all their children and that there is no hope for more, but he shirks the idea of replacing them. Still, Fethryn allowed no selfishness or false modesty to deprive the clan of a future in the unlikely event of his passing, and Lear eventually bent to his uncle’s will. While Fethryn appears ageless and Lear is unlikely to ever assume the position of leader, they must nevertheless be prepared for the worst. Besides, Fethryn understands his nephew well, and he would never force him to idle in the role of heir while there is work to be done.

His position as a courier was given to him by Fethryn, who perceived that the drake’s reckless passion for the skies needed tempering and gave him over to the flight master, Baroque. Let him fly, Fethryn had said, but let it be done with purpose and for the good of the clan. Still, Lear is grateful for the post, and he is never found complaining about the work. It gives him a way to earn some money and feel equal to those he dreads that he may one day rule over, but it also supplies an excuse to take off at a moment’s notice and leave the world behind for a while.

As he visits all part of the clan to collect and deliver the post, Lear knows almost all the dragons in passing. Those he would call friends, however, are few and far between. Among those few are Gallio, the astronomer who won Lear’s friendship through an unrelenting willingness to let him peer at the heavens through the snapper’s telescope. Another is Jensen, who though a little older than Lear, always has plenty of letters to send and entertains Lear with stories he writes -- even having no objection if the Pearlcatcher should read them in the skies and misplace a few pages on the way. Jensen always has extra copies lying around.

If Lear cannot be said to take friendship too seriously, the letters are a different matter entirely. Clan LockCharge does not view privacy and shame in the way that others do, so letters are left, for the most part, unsealed. Countless slips of paper pass through Lear’s hands into his satchels and are left undisturbed until they reach their intended recipient. On the rare occasion, he will read them and wonder at the circumstances of their writing, after all, even a solitary dragon like Lear can feel lonely. Most of the letters are not private anyway, as most Clan LockCharge dragons can’t write and dictate them to one of a few scribes. Lear is not sure if he is afflicted with that cruel circumstance of unletteredness, and shameful as it may seem, he has never had the courage to find out.

The dragons who mistrust lettering offer their message by word of mouth, even if these messages are lengthy complicated pieces. As a result, Lear has an infallible memory. Upon hearing a message once, it is ingrained into his mind and when the time comes to relay it, he will keep as true to the original in tone and inflection as he can. The times that a message is witnessed by someone other than the recipient, Lear seems an actor performing a part with flawless commitment to the role, but when it ends, his demeanor shifts back to that of a courier who longs for something more than the earth can offer. There is tragedy there, but also great joy that becomes apparent when his wings take him to the realm of wind and water where he will always feel that he belongs.
