“You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?”

Those are the first words Sanka heard, when she finally found her way back to Cypress Clan territory. First, since she stumbled away from the nest, following a wordless Call into the Labyrinth.

She followed! The Call beckoned, and Sanka followed-! She forgot her parents, and her siblings, lost memory of anything but the enticing Call, and she answered-! But the swamp was deep, and Sanka wasn’t strong enough to swim through the viscus mire-

So she sank.

Cold muck tugged relentlessly at wing and fin, and sucked the hatchling down. She screamed, and the ooze filled her nose and mouth.

Sanka drowned in the bog, and all the while, the Call vibrated through her bones, coaxing her to the singer’s side.

It’s always a tragedy, losing a hatchling to the bog.

But consider this: it’s even worse when they find their way back home.

Blessed by the Glademother, the clan declared.

Cursed, her dam whispered.

Despite the static decay of Sanka's body, she persisted. And while the clan tried to hide it, they were afraid of the creature their lost hatchling had become. If it even was their hatchling, and not some malevolent spirit wearing her carcass. That Sanka now lacked the ability to speak, or make vocalizations of any sort, left her state of mind in question.

None knew what was to be done with the once-lost, now-returned youngling who avoided the lair proper, lurking out of sight just beyond the well-traveled paths of the clan. The brave-hearted took it upon themselves to seek out the Lost One, and the kindly professed that Sanka gave an air of listening, despite the lack of any acknowledgement other than an unnatural stillness of bearing.

It was Kovu, with his typical irritation, gruffly scolded the clan for their lack of observation, as Sanka had obviously been patrolling the perimeter of nesting grounds, night and day. Several hatchlings, once questioned, admitted to being herded away from the forest’s edge by the wraithlike figure, frightening them enough to discourage further wanderings.

With sorrowful realization, doubts receded and any clanmate crossing paths with Sanka in her self-imposed exile greet her warmly, with all the respect due to a sentinel.

And if the clans hatchlings have ever after been told of the Sleepless One, a skeleton with glowing eyes who walks the swamp after dark- well, all legends start somewhere.

Sanka does not consider her life a tragedy. Instead, her unfortunate beginning fuels her desire to protect others, especially the young and helpless.

To this day, Sanka is one of the staunchest defenders of the Cypress Clan.
