training & lore by:

She was a stranger in a very strange land.

Senlin absentmindedly drew lazy circles in the dirt with the tip of her tail. It was a self-soothing behavior of sorts, something she often caught herself doing when she was deep in thought about a stressful situation. And this was, to put it simply, a stressful situation. The great Imperial could see her breath form into clouds before her as she stood, alone, in the grasps of the Starwood Strand. The temperature had dropped quickly in this alien terrain and Senlin shivered – partly from the cold, partly from her anxiety of being in a land she had only ever heard of in stories.

Her eyes shifted to the great expanse of stars above her. Where would she go from here? The universe was much larger than she ever could have dreamed. Lost in thought and the beauty of the night sky, Senlin did not hear the soft footsteps of another dragon approaching her. A low growl snapped her out of her reverie.

“Who. Are. You.”

Pivoting swiftly, the Imperial searched the surrounding darkness to find the source of the voice. The sparse moonlight trickling through the branches was not enough to reveal the growling creature. Fear began to worm its way into her heart, followed by a mind-numbing uncertainty. Was she in danger? Who could it be? Why were they hostile? A threat? What was she facing? A multitude of questions raced through her conscious, but Senlin could not answer them.

Mind reeling with dread and panic, her worried gaze finally found a golden Skydancer half-hidden in the gloom beneath the trees. Senlin froze, praying to all the deities that she didn’t just trespass into some monster’s territory and was about to be someone’s midnight snack. The sudden silence was deafening.

“Who. Are. You.”

The Skydancer repeated themselves, interrupting the stillness of the night. It wasn't so much as a question, as it was a demand. Senlin’s tail flicked another circle in the dirt. “I-I-I…. I’m just a traveler.” She squeaked out, an odd noise coming from such a gigantic creature. “I’m lost.” And lost she was, in more ways than one. The young Imperial had left her homeland in the Sunbeam Ruins, forsaking the blessings of the Lightweaver, to explore the endless wilderness beyond His borders. Yet, despite the past months and months of strenuous travel, Senlin had yet to find even the beginning of her destiny. She had deftly navigated the Lightning Farm of the Shifting Expanse, swam through the gargantuan bones of forgotten beasts in the Fishspine Reef, and toiled through the pockmarked domain of the Plaguebringer – but she still had not found what she sought.

And what, you may ask, did the Imperial seek? Well, even she had not the faintest idea.

“Come.”

The Skydancer stepped into the starlight, luminous scales reflected the light and cast dancing rays amongst the trees. Senlin could tell it was a female, long and lithe, with brilliant green plumage running down her spine – bright, even in such darkness. ”Where?” The Imperial blurted, suddenly feeling incredibly small. The fear began to creep further into her bones as the Skydancer approached, seemingly oblivious to the Imperial’s ever-growing discomfort.

Senlin’s claws dug into the soil, the pine needles below like thorns in the space between her toes. Her muscles tensed with anticipation as the Skydancer drew closer. Absolutely ready to defend herself, Senlin was pleasantly surprised that the Skydancer nimbly maneuvered her way past and into the dense foliage behind her massive form. The Imperial pivoted again and watched as the Skydancer began to disappear, moving deeper into the darkness of the trees.

As the splendor left Senlin’s little clearing in the Starwood Strand, the viridian wyvern abruptly decided her own fate. "WAIT!” She called out after the Skydancer, “Wait! I’m coming.”

Maybe, just maybe – I get to decide my own destiny.
