» The Cathedral

The Cathedral is a place of the highest order. An impressive monument of shattered bone and crystalline marble, it protrudes from the barren earthen landscape as an unshakeable thorn that radiates twisted ideals and foul intent. In its' own way, the Cathedral is beautiful and ephemeral. For those destined to wander the sacred halls, it resonates with an alluring melody - sung by an individual so divine and beautiful that none can resist her call once they step foot upon such sacred ground. She is the Empress of the Cathedral; their true deity and the one whose words are heeded above all else. To be chosen by her is to be chosen by a god, and those who find themselves selected may enter the Cathedral under promises of grandeur and ascension.

Those blessed by such an honour find themselves as the elite of dragonkind. Warriors, scholars, historians, alchemists, scientists; all who show promise are welcome. Under her guidance they are forged anew into Paragons. These Paragons stand as the very pinnacle of their chosen craft; presenting themselves as champions above all else and utilising their skills to, in turn, favour their Empress and bring her great pride. Under her reign, they conquer. Warriors will slaughter entire clans as rite of passage. Scholars will develop ideas beyond comprehension. Scientists will complete cruel and unethical experiments in her name. Alchemists will learn to soar upon wings of poison and rain death down upon their enemies. Many Paragons will not survive for long, their bodies exhausting past their breaking points sometimes within months of indoctrination. Some may be turned upon in selfish gain, while others may be considered too weak and cast out of the order as an embarrassment to the Cathedral. Such is the cycle, and the cycle will be reborn with every new Paragon brought into the order.

When word of Shal'anir, a sacred tree within the Tangled Wood, reached the ear of the Cathedral, it was seen as a challenge. The Cathedral had not seen a raid for some time and the Paragons within were growing restless. Some even began to question the sheer influence the order had. They had come for blood and ruin - and the only blood they'd spilt was one another's. The Empress' song soon shifted into a deadly tone and she called for blood to be rain upon the Shadowbinder's lands. Her chosen, the Prime, mobilised the greatest Paragons the Cathedral had to offer in order to fulfil such a desire and the drums of war began to beat slow and sluggish; the heartbeat of a faltering order only now beginning to be felt. It was a command that couldn't, wouldn't, be denied, and the promise of bloodshed was enough to excite even the most 'tame' denizens of the Cathedral.

Yet, where one song, the song of the Empress, sounded, another voice joined hers - if only one would listen. It was a song of bitter beauty and weakening resolve. The Empress had grown desperate in her old age, the Prime was too deluded to see the truth of it all, and her council were simply enabling the weakening monarch. Surely, then, the Cathedral and the Paragons she had raised would be doomed to become simple figments of myth and legend. Under her they would be nothing, for attacking Shal'anir seemed to be nothing more than a pitiful attempt to alleviate growing tensions within the order. One Paragon in particular, the Manipulator, saw the truth of it all, and as the Paragons marched beside their Prime to the sound of rolling thunder and calls for bloodshed, his true potential, hidden even from the Empress, began to make itself known. This was one march they would not return from.

When the forces of the Cathedral finally stepped upon the land of Shal'anir, they were met with dragons who, what they lacked for in skill to match the Paragons, made up for with resolve and the determination to protect their home. Shal'anir was not defenceless, and to believe that it would have been so was foolish beyond measure. One of the Cathedral's own now stood beside her and her kin - an act of bitter irony that could be tasted in the mouth of all who recognised the fallen Paragon.

For a moment all was still; each dragon eyeing up one particular enemy they considered equal to their skill. Teeth were bared, growls rippled across the battlefield of shadow, and eyes burned in challenge to the opposing side. It looked to be the battle of bloodshed the Empress had promised them - a great fight to exercise skills left dormant. Yet, on that day, only the blood of one dragon was spilt.

In a savage act of betrayal against all that they stood for, the same Paragon that had begun to sing of their Empress weakening, struck out against his very Prime - an act that could only be topped by striking out against the Empress he served directly. The great dragon who embodied everything the Cathedral stood for, an individual so revered and so idolised by every Paragon as the closest to a father figure they would ever come, was as a blade of grass against an onslaught of blood and rage. He hadn't even had the time to utter the final command to press the attack upon Shal'anir before a blow came from behind; rendering him immobile and choking him on his own blood for a few pitiful seconds before he fell to the ground - dead before he even hit it. The one who had committed such a foul act made no effort to hide it and it was with an uncanny, sickening level of pride that the Skydancer strode past his Prime and presented himself to the very matriarch of Shal'anir. He offered no immediate explanation to either side, for no words left the wicked smirk that crept onto his handsome features.

Instead, the Paragon simply extended his wings out in a peaceful gesture and lowered himself to the ground in front of the confused, horrified, and outright repulsed dragons of Shal'anir. He bowed low and graciously, his head inclined and presenting the complete picture of reverence. The act was, of itself, an extension of allegiance. It was very clear that this Paragon had no intentions of returning to his Cathedral. Instead, he would come to offer his aid to Shal'anir herself - presenting himself as one to be trusted and respected within the clan and, with him, the other Paragons would surely follow. A strange turn of events, no doubt, but it was a key turning point within Shal'anir's history that would shape her future forevermore.

The Paragons of the Cathedral were gone, and, with their death, the Paragons of Shal'anir had risen.

42675946.png V E S P E R: Queen and ruler of Shal'anir. Has penultimate control over all dragons within Shal'anir - whether that control be direct or not. Doesn't have control, however, over the wyvern.
6905707.png S E K K: Primary advisor, Sekk was within Shal'anir way before Vesper was and so instructs and educates her when needed. Practises the same magic that Shal'anir is ailed by, and has (minimal) control over Shal'anir's wyvern.
47856043.png A E R: From the same cycle as Sekk, imprisoned beneath Shal'anir'sd epths and awakened as the tree stirred. Him and Sekk don't get along. He's much like Sekk but kinder and more patient.
4905133.png E I D O L O N: War general and orders all the main guards of Shal'anir (minus Agnar and Karuk), but doesn't have control over the paragons. Advises Vesper and guides her hand in battle. Needs technician?
7058358.png P H A L A N X: Guard captain, although she's more a secondary figurehead. Mostly acts as the queen's personal guard, and also advises if she has to. Generally keeps quiet in meetings, though.
55089506.png K O R V E N: Head researcher within the clan, which overlaps with the paragons. On account of his research and background, he's widely regarded as the forefather of the paragons and they answer directly to him.
Fq8JdNX.png Z E R I A: Peaceful moon priestess, Zeria mediates during more heated clan meetings and tries to keep Shal'anir's best interests in mind.

55268649.png S E R V I N: Healer of Shal'anir, he isn't classified as a council member but sometimes will attend on account of being the queen's mate. Mediates and, like Zeria, has the best interest of others in mind. Argues with more war-inclined dragons a lot.
46140621.png I S K A N D A R: On account of his prophet status, Iskandar cannot attend meetings unless it's on a matter he cannot foresee, lest he steer Shal'anir down the 'best' route and possibly mess up reality.

EPzRU8B.png A N D R O M E D A: First daughter of Vesper, Andromeda is presumably the next queen/empress and spends much of her time preparing for her overtaking - be it by Vesper dying naturally/unnaturally or through trial of death between the two.
iKBhuYm.png O R I O N: Due to being male, he's not allowed to partake in the trail to best his mother in combat and become ruler. Doesn't mind and wants to instead just be left to watch the stars.
J5nPuUB.png C A S S I O P E I A: Youngest daughter who also has no interest in being ruler of Shal'anir, Cass' just makes tea a lot. Might practise some herbalism with her father and eventually become a healer, or a warrior. Jack-of-all-trades.

Mtl4dvj.png V I Z I E R: The queen's personal alchemist. Doesn't really answer to his parents and also distances himself from his siblings, as if he has something to prove. Might be a paragon but bc he's the queen's personal alchemist he considers himself above them.
qa6JbyB.png A E R O W Y N: Voice of Shal'anir, he was once a seeker but has amnesia and was 'reborn' from memories not his own. Something of a priest, he answers to the queen and the queen alone.
NGxQppF.png K A Z: Scrollmaster and as dodgy as Vizier. Definitely can't fight but he doesn't need to. Tends to sow chaos with his words and so Vesper keeps him close to her. Sometimes acts as ambassador and does a good job.

46744898.png K A R U K: Paragon of Shal'anir who also doubles up as a guard. Was born a guardian but became a wildclaw as a gift when he became a paragon. Close to his brother and Easar.
47555640.png A G N A R: Older brother to Karuk, and another paragon who doubles up as a guard. Rough, gruff, and tough all describe him, but his heart is in the right place. Argues with Vizier a lot.
50969968.png E A S A R: Paragon. Scout and fellow warrior of Shal'anir but isn't counted as a guard. Very good at scouting and very rarely gets caught - if enemies want a vantage point they don't even consider this one.
B7Ce1h2.png J A ' R A K: Once a vigilante and now a vision of proactive justice within Shal'anir, Ja'rak commands the storm and so often isn't found on his pedestal. Clears the skies for Ka'avak and his storm heralds her arrival.
54864542.png L U C I E L: While Ja'rak clears the skies, Luciel paints them in catastrophic arcane energy. Doesn't get on with many. Another researcher alongside Korven, it's their research that will see paragon preservation come to fruition.
53307412.png Z A C H A R I A H: Although he's considered a paragon, Zach rejects the title. His job is more than that. Very paranoid of most dragons and has done some questionable things in the line of duty. Watches Vizier with scary intensity.

BktKTIK.png J A Z Z: Third-in-command under Eidolon, the guards answer to him if all else fails. Very jovial, but has killed and will do so again. Here to have a good time, really.
TcJNzb8.png K A T O: Young guard, more in training than anything. Might end up being Cassiopeia's guard? Or maybe not. Idk yet.
53760824.png F R E Y J A: Wide-roaming guard, although the term is very loose. Huntress and the one dragons go to if they want to learn her craft. Her and Jazz get on very well. Controls the umbra wolves around the area to also protect Shal'anir.
55216583.png J A C K: Guard probably isn't the right word but still. Comes around, although dragons don't really know why. You can try to command him but he's as likely to revoke the order as he is to do it - except Jazz. Low-key scared of Jazz.

52813813.png K A ' A V A K: Wyvern. Ultimate weapon. Flying flamethrower of death and destruction. Not often seen, but will answer Shal'anir's call - as well as Sekk's. Will soon be joined by another in the skies.
