Sadie

Sadrina Entowin Crystalis has never wanted to be as important as her parents claimed she would be. They took their duties very seriously, her parents, always going from clan to clan, argument to argument, calming tempers, soothing ruffled feathers, and making peace between dragons of every kind. They told her that she, like any in their family, was just as expected to be a peacemaker when she grew up, and that the sooner she accepted her role, the better she would get at it.

But Sadie didn’t want a life settling other people’s problems.
Sadie wanted to fly.

She spent hours riding the winds when she was supposed to be studying etiquette. She chased comets when she was supposed to be reviewing her languages. She dived and danced under the stars, her heart filled with the joy of life, when she was supposed to be asleep, settling her studies for the next day.

“Someday,” she told herself as she flew, higher and higher in spirals, “Someday I will do what they want of me…some day, when the doesn’t sparkle so brightly, and the wind doesn’t call my name…”

And she spoke true, for while she loved herself, she also loved her clan, and did not dismiss the good work it did.

And as there are times of year when it rains, and snows, and the stars to not shine and the wind shouts instead of calling, Sadie studies.

But the second the sky clears….
