Biography

Imriel
Geology Undergraduate

Brent Goose Satin Violets Lurching Tome

Imriel was found, as a hatchling, under a bush, wearing a party hat. This is very on-brand for her. The hat suggested she'd been cared for, but Xylem was never able to find her birth clan, and so eventually gave up searching to raise Imriel as her own. Imriel has grown up alongside the University itself - and both have become large, unruly, and quite efficient at giving Xylem a headache.

Notes:

-likes to bite rocks
-scarf enthusiast
-used to be insecure about her ugly genes and colours
-her best friend Haggar is 85% of her impulse control
-usually causing shenanigans
-loves hugs
-is so clumsy some dragons wonder if it's sometimes on purpose

The atrium of the University was one of the few areas that was reached by natural light. The warren-like cave system that housed laboratories, study rooms, and lecture theatres had plenty of other access points (largely for health and safety reasons), but none quite so vast and airy. The atrium was, therefore, visited frequently by students needing breaks from work.

It was also often visited by students who had nothing better to do.

"WoahAhhh WHO IS SHE?" asked Imriel, a long, purple-green Mirror from the Starfall Isles. She nudged her fellow Flight-member Haggar, a short, red and black Nocturne, with her wing. Haggar had her head stuck in a burlap sack for some reason, and so promptly fell over.

"Who is who? Where?" she asked, grappling with Imriel's wing, "like what? Wait lemme get this thing off my head hang on..."

Imriel paid no attention to her. She was busy staring at the small brown Pearlcatcher, who was barely larger than a hatchling. She clearly came from Dragonhome, with her dark brown eyes almost invisible among the rich feathery scales of her face. She wouldn't have been particularly striking were it not for threads of gold winding their way across her body - they reminded Imriel of the ancient seams of ore that one could still find in the deepest parts of the University. But, beauty aside (or perhaps because of it), something was off. So she was going to go and find out what. Right now. As soon as Haggar stopped flopping around, the sack now caught on her horns.

Imriel rolled her eyes. At least her friend could see.

"Come on, there's a new arrival! And she looks interesting!!!"

"Can't we wait until I'm presentable?"

"NO," said Imriel, and darted off, pulling Haggar's arm with her tail.

They reached the far end of the foyer in about 3 seconds, taking pains not to collide with a stray ferberus. They collided with the receptionist's granite desk instead. Haggar catapulted over the top and crashed into the receptionist himself- a Pearlcatcher named Aude.

"Hi!!!" Imriel yelled at the newcomer, ignoring the infuriated squawks and Haggar's confused apologies.

The newcomer didn't reply, instead choosing to stare with a mixture of surprise and fear, crouched as if she were about to run at any moment. This wasn't a problem for Imriel. She tended to have that sort of effect on people, when they first met her.

"My name is Imriel!" she said, bobbing her head and neck briefly, as was Wind Flight custom, "are you a new student? Or are you just lost? Both options are good!"

The newcomer glanced at the desk, behind which Haggar and an enraged Aude were still grappling on the floor, then said, in a very quiet voice, "student".

"Cool!! Me too, except I grew up here and can't take written exams cos I can't sit still, so they just let me do oral presentations instead and also explain things to people in seminars! I'm good at explaining things! Want me to show you around? You're here at a weird time of year so they'll probably put you into Haggar's dorm! Oh yeah, that's Haggar over there. She's terribly clumsy and always getting into scrapes. I don't know how she does it."

The newcomer blinked, her expression exactly the same as before Imriel's monologue. She opened her mouth, but before she could even start to respond, Haggar appeared from around the side of the desk, looking subdued. Aude was back at his post, looking murderous on his part.

"Name, please," he said, voice curt.

"Action," said the newcomer, "Action of Terraclae."

Imriel was about to say that Action's name was lovely, and Earth Flight was so far away, and could she tell them what Terraclae was like, and what course was she interested in, but Haggar grabbed her face and closed her mouth before she could start.

"Can I see some ID?"

Action shook her head, looking uncomfortable.

"Alright. Well, we're here to teach you, not hand you over to the police. I'm assuming you didn't register yet?" Aude barely looked at her as he shuffled papers around and wrote things with his fancy quill. Imriel was jealous of that quill. Expensive.

Action's mouth fell open.

"I'm not, I'm not a crim - I mean, no, I didn't register."

"And you're here to enroll on which graduate course?"

"History."

We're in the same department!! Imriel wanted to yell, but didn't. She could feel Haggar watching her closely.

Unexpectedly, Haggar reached out a hand and pulled them both back so that they were standing a respectful distance away, and more importantly, out of earshot. She turned, blocking Imriel's view of the newcomer.

"She looked absolutely terrified by us!" said Haggar, lashing her tail, "couldn't you have waited to introduce yourself until after she'd registered?"

"Er, well, hey, I introduced you too!"

"While I was busy crushing someone and apologising? Great first impression."

"Oh, we've had worse introductions." Imriel began to feel slightly embarrassed, which was interestingly rare.

So was Haggar's anger.

"Not much worse! And look how you scared Kingdom away."

"Oh pfff she's a plant freak anyway."

"She's a very nice person who won't speak to me because she thinks you're insane," said Haggar, through gritted teeth.

Ouch. Okay.

"Are you sure it's not because she thinks you're insane?"

"Ha. I'm sure," said Haggar. She shut her mouth, spread her wings, and flew upwards over Imriel, who had to duck. Imriel turned to watch as Haggar banked steeply, then flew out of the main entrance, disappearing past the rock pillars into the bright light of day.

Well. Imriel would give it a week, have fun hanging out with all her other amazing friends, and then invite Haggar to go fishing with her. It'd be fine.

She turned back to look at Action, who was now walking away from the front desk, her arms full of papers. Admin probably.

Imriel grinned. It was now time to give a Uni tour to a newbie!!

A wandering, ugly hatchling was found under a bush by Phloem, and, true to her habits, Phloem brought the hatchling home. A secluded clan of few breeds, its members were not quite sure what to do with a young Mirror. Should they believe the stereotypes of insatiable hunger and savagery? Would the pack mentality eventually cause an influx of raving Mirrors?

Some clan-members derided the hatchling's appearance, saying she must've been cast out by her family for her dark, dirty colours. Perhaps it was an indicator of a terrible personality?

Ohma (one of the few Pearlcatchers in the clan) stepped in here, as usual, to declare that this was only a child and could no judgments be made just yet please? She understood their fear of something strange, but maybe if they started reading the histories of other breeds besides their own, they may learn something? Mirrors wouldn't be so new then.

Grumbling and slightly embarrassed, the skeptical clan-members departed, leaving the hatchling alone with Ohma and the clan leader, Xylem.

"What's your name?" asked Ohma, feeling rather sorry for the creature, and not even sure if she could talk.

"Imriel."

"Ooh, that's a lovely name! Come, Xylem will show you the nursery."

Xylem sighed. She picked up the hatchling and placed her securely on her back, between her wing muscles.

"We'll find where you come from, and get you home soon, I swear," she said, "I can't really afford to raise yet another hatchling. This clan already requires all my attention just to feed it."

Imriel said nothing.

Ohma watched them go, worrying her whiskers between her claws. She was quite sure that the hatchling had been abandoned.
