This dragon is enchanting. You feel lesser in his presence, as if you are in the company of a being beyond your comprehension. His is a radiant beauty that haunts you during sleepless nights; you cannot get him out of your head, but you cannot bear to tell him so, knowing innately that he would refuse you. Those who are nearer to him than you are subject to your ire.

Why? Why do you think only of him?

When the weather is fine, he sings for the clan. You imagine that he is singing to you alone. His voice is clear, muffled by neither wind nor weather, and all who hear it are drawn to him. They sway with his gentle rhythm, their eyes flitting behind closed lids. Your ardor for him is reignited; your heart clenches painfully in your chest. You will do anything to earn his affection, even if only for a short while.

At last, you’ve plucked up your courage. As the final note of his song fades on the evening air, you approach him. You tell him your feelings in a rush, expecting disgust…

...but he only sighs.

“My music is meant to heal,” he says, “not enthrall. I did not mean to make you suffer such a terrible burden.” Lightly, he brushes his knuckles across your cheek, and you believe that you have never been happier in all your years. “I’m sorry.”

Then he is gone, and you are left empty.
