Biography

Story

Antithema grew up in a clan of rich Light flight pearlcatchers. It was nice to grow up thinking she was the best species of dragon in the world, in the best flight in the world. But as she became a teenager, other pearlcatchers began bullying her, leaving her out of gatherings, calling her disgusting and dark. Adults she asked for help told her to "handle it herself" with disappointment in their eyes. As the bullying only grew into physical abuse, Antithema found solace in the clan's rarely frequented spots-- condemned egg nests, the tops of trees, the dusty old library. Hiding among the large marble shelves, Antithema spent her days sorting, cleaning, and reading books in the library to avoid getting beaten. Slowly her other spots became unused as her appetite for books grew.

Inevitably, her favorite place of refuge was discovered.

It was the worst night of her life. Then when she was too injured to move, one pearlcatcher pulled out a book the adults had removed from the library, one that contained the reason Antithema was so hated.

Her father had mated with someone that was not only not a pearlcatcher, but he'd left the light flight, leaving behind the egg he and his mate had produced to be adopted by her clan.

Antithema was not pure, not good, tainted, ugly, terrible. The dragons left her with the book, laughing. Deep in an identity crisis, Antithema left the only home she knew for Arcane, the flight she thought most similar to Light. While there, a chance encounter with the Reflectionists left her further injured before she was found by Speculo, who invited her to join the Coalition of Broken Glass. Having nowhere else to go, Antithema reluctantly accepted.

Finding the clan's library virtually nonexistent, Antithema organized books, parchment, and scrolls from the hoard into neat shelves and stacks. She ordered shelves, desks, and chairs from Corinna, the clan architect. Antithema essentially built the clan's well-organized library from scratch. When Speculo praised her highly for her work, she blushed and said it was simply her job for the clan. The whole clan celebrated her official joining that night not with a loud party, which she would dislike, but instead with a day of quiet reading and reflection in the library. Antithema felt so welcomed and happy, something she'd never even felt in her own clan, that she decided to never leave.

Personality

Pearlcatchers are notoriously cowardly, but Antithema even more so. She can only shakily hold conversations with dragons she doesn't know well, and yelps at sudden sounds. When confronted with danger, she often becomes too scared to even run, instead cowering with her wings over her head and pearl. She cries easily when frightened or hurt.

Antithema loves books, however, and when reading will find herself too engrossed to become frightened. Clanmates will often come to the library to gently remind her it is lunch or dinnertime, as when she is engrossed in a book or care of the library, she will often forget to even eat.

Antithema also likes everything to be clean and tidy, resulting in a well-organized library and archives system.

Antithema is a sweetheart around dragons she knows, filled with sincere compliments and always willing to discuss books or philosophy.

Antithema responds well to affection from clanmates, especially Corinna, the fae architect who helped her construct most of the library's structures. Corinna is also a voracious reader of the few architecture books in the library. Antithema considers Corinna her best friend but loves most everybody in the clan. She also works hard for praise from Speculo, considering her the "coolest dragon to walk the earth."

Atramento, the clan historian, is also a good friend of hers, as his work makes him spend a lot of time in the library.

If someone refuses or forgets to return a book to Antithema on time, someone will chastise them, and the offending dragon will earn disapproving glares and an attitude from the whole clan until the book is returned.

If someone makes Antithema cry, they will suffer the wrath of the entirety of The Coalition of Broken Glass.

Quotes

"F-fantasy? Oh, that's one of my favorites... it's on that shelf over there."
"You found more books? Yay! Let me see!"

Studious Citrine

I wrote a story in order to get this dragon. Here is what I wrote for her:

Antithema was surely cursed, she thought.

Who else, after all, would be stupid enough to accidentally tread on the territory of a pack of Mirrors? She limped hastily away, temporarily unable to fly, hoping the scent of her wounds would not catch the nose of some predator. Mirrors were awful. They attacked first and asked questions later. Antithema soon found herself settling into the mindlessness of walking while in pain, one foot in front of the other. Left, right, left, right. She supposed she'd settle down in a shallow hole or depression when she could walk no longer and hope she wasn't in someone's hunting grounds again.

She hated fighting, but always found herself in a fight. What an oxymoron!

And eventually, when the birds were just starting to sing and the sky was threatening the deep cerulean that would soon break into dawn, she did. She curled up protectively around her pearl in her sleep and sighed, content, dripping into that in-between of consciousness and rest, floating peacefully--

Something was breathing on her face.

She shot up and away, gasping, clutching at her pearl with a hind leg and beating her wings as though to fly away or intimidate (she did not yet know which, her mind had not caught up with her body) when it registered just what was watching her as she slept. She yelped shrilly in terror.

Would she never be rid of Mirrors? Would this one do worse to her, for not quite leaving their territory?

"Stop," the sky-blue Mirror said. "Just stop beating your wings like a headless chicken and calm yourself."

"But! You're!!" Antithema cried.

"You met my previous family, I see," The Mirror said, circling the jaguar-spotted dragon, smelling her blood, examining her wounds with four sharp Arcane eyes. "A bit of a coward, but that's to be expected of a Pearlcatcher. And a rather attractive coat. Yes. You will do."

"Huh?"

"My Clan. Would you like to join? For safety? For common sense?"

"I..."

"Let me rephrase that. Would you like me to leave you alone in the woods at the mercy of my former Mirror family? I honestly don't know how you got this deep without being captured."

"Captured?"

"Yes. For slavery."

"W-what? You're kidding!"

"Am I?"

"This is too much."

"You can always change your mind, you know," the Mirror said, settling back on (his? her? Antithema didn't know yet) their hind legs, tail curling earnestly around their paws. "If you don't like it, you can always leave. But we could use another set of wings."

Antithema's wounds stung as she sat down as well, rubbing her pearl anxiously.

"My name is Speculo. I'm a female from the Arcane flight," the Mirror said.

"I... I'm Antithema."
