  • You labor on your machine for weeks upon weeks. Hire familiars to assist you. Hire other dragons. On a lovely spring day when the sky is clear, the doors open. Proudly you wheel your contraption outside: artificial wings to carry even the stoutest of Snappers. All it needs is a little test, and then you'll be the first Snapper to span the sky.
Your neighbor passes by. Another Snapper. He gives your brainchild only the briefest of glances. He goes to the edge of a cliff and steps off. A gust of wind whisks him away. You look around you, but no one else is surprised. No one else is moved. Snappers have been using magic for years.
  • A flier is smashed under your foot. The grime barely covers up a sunny picture: a tropical beach bordered by crystal-blue water. The sand is white, pristine. You can almost hear the waves and the breeze. You look at the picture, and there is not another dragon in sight.
You arrive weeks later and there are dragons, other dragons, as far as the eye can see. The breeze is drowned out by babble and roars, and the waves covered up by youngsters splashing in the water. A child bumps into you and falls to the sand, wailing. In his claws is a flier identical to the one you saw. Everybody around you is clutching the same flier.
  • The board shows a list of things you might win. A rare familiar. A magic spell to change the color of your eyes. An enchanted headdress for breathing underwater. You join the crowd and are caught up in wonderful imaginings, and you share them all. That familiar will become your friend. Your eyes will glow like the stars above. You'll put on the headdress and dive into the darkest deeps, where you'll find the Tidelord himself...
The raffle master compliments you on your musings. She offers you tickets to purchase. Your dreams slip away like soap bubbles as she tells you that each ticket costs treasure. You have none.
You return next week to try your luck, but the prizes have changed. Flower petals. A spell to polish your scales. A possible new clanmate whom you don't like the look of. You buy tickets anyway, because you're here. Seven days later, the prizes change, and your name is not on the list of winners. You look at the prizes. You like them even less than you did before. You buy tickets anyway, because you're here.
  • You are invited to the hall for the clan festival party, and you come bearing a gift, some pudding you made by yourself. At the hall, you greet your clanmates and place your dish on the long table. Within minutes, it's surrounded by other platters. Bowls of crispy-fried insects, slabs of meat the size of your head. Seafood and flowers from distant lands. Your pudding, finally, is eclipsed by a cake like a skyscraper. It towers over the rest of the table, and your creation shrinks in its shadow. At the end of the night, when you come back, most of the food is gone. Your pudding is still there, about half of it having been cut away. Clanmates bustle around you, carrying empty platters and bowls. You show them your half-eaten pudding. They don't really see the point. That cake was really good, though. It was a delicious cake. Everyone wants to keep talking about the cake.
  • You decide to head to sleep. It's late and you're tired; tomorrow is another day. You will have the energy and the ideas you'll need.
You wake up and it's a good day. A clear sky with distant clouds, golden sunlight touching the mountains, and laughter ringing in the streets. A day for ideas. A day for wonder. A day to try something new.
    You do nothing.
