A child, just hatched, tumbling out of her shell. Still damp with egg-fluid, eyes blinking at the bright new world. Her parents and siblings crowd closer...closer.... “She’s perfect!” they exclaim, their faces shining with joy. They coo over her pale scales, her shining eyes....It would be better if she had more of those eyes, dark violet orbs studding her skin like living gems. An excellent example of darkness and light offsetting each other. A harmonious balance.

The lair is ancient, but still serviceable. It has withstood time and the elements, survived battles and natural disasters, the occasional accident or two. It’s a historical structure, an entity in its own right, and dragons flock here to study its architecture, to admire the strength and beauty of it. Literally anything else could rise here and still be better: a hospital, perhaps, or a school for future generations. A market. A park. Anything at all would be better than this.

He’s a great painter. A prodigy since childhood, his works admired for the clarity of the forms he draws and the purity of the pigments he uses. He mixes the latter himself. It’s no small feat to do this and then create his paintings, and his works always fetch tidy sums. He supports his clan. They are proud of him, so proud. They’ve given him an atelier of his own and are happy to greet him when he rambles through the towns and fields on his search for inspiration. Everything he sees can be viewed in books or scrying crystals. There is no need for him to go outside. He should stay longer in his atelier to maximize profits for his clan.

The clan is thriving, and has done so for some time. Their leader inherited the position from her parents, and continues to uphold the traditions passed down through her line. Her subordinates are happy, all the children are well-fed, and they have enough food in their stores. They are stagnating. The leader should die tomorrow. This will push the clan to choose a new leader. The old one has educated the youngsters well. Any one of them would be a better ruler than her.

The globe is a miniature version of the world, a perfect execution of it. It rotates slowly above its pedestal. It is enchanted to show the planet’s current natural state, and as with the real world, clouds swirl around it and waves lap at the landmasses’ shores. As it turns, the light hits it just right, throwing the mountains into stark relief so that they trace the most pleasing shapes upon the plains. This is how it should be: Frozen in that single moment, forever at peace on a perfect autumn afternoon. Frozen...forever...at peace....Perfect.

This is perfection — here: this face, these arms, this skin; this picture right here. The one right on the cover. This is what perfection is. This is what you are not. You know perfection well. You see it every day. The world is less than ideal at the moment, but it will be just right soon, you’ll see. All it needs is a little help....It needs your help. You won’t stop until it’s as perfect as images you see. You won't stop till you no longer have to nitpick at yourself for no longer looking as perfect as you once were. You won’t stop....
