Biography
......................... |
Darkness blanketed the land, a soft glow from the moon all that illuminated the terrain. A gentle breeze blew, causing the grass and foliage to sway only slightly out of place. Nothing else stirred on the plain. A dying fire - nothing but smouldering embers remaining - cast a flickering light on the camp of some traveling dragons, who slumbered around it.
- - -
A muddy-colored coatl slithered out from the shadows beside the camp, silently drawing closer to the party. A hooded cowl obscured the dragon's face, yet his eyes glowed from beneath its cover. He approached the camp and paused for just a moment to observe the dragons before him. Three dragons, fast asleep, no night watch. An easy job.
- - -
In a matter of moments the coatl made his way around the camp, silently seeking out anything of value that the travellers had brought with them. He easily uncovered and picked up coin pouches, trinkets, and jewelry from the slumbering dragons, slipping them into his own pouch without the other dragons even stirring. He spent only a few moments in close proximity of the others, finding the valuable items he needed with expert eyes and precise movements. He slipped out of the camp as quickly and quietly as he had entered.
- - -
He sometimes wondered if his conscience would ever wake up, if he would ever feel bad about the items he took and about those he took them from. So far, that wasn't the case. This was the life he lived, and it always had been. He'd grown up among scavengers, swindlers and thieves, and he was small and fast, so they'd given him the role of thief and pickpocket. He was skilled at it too, easily able to pick items of value from the pockets, pouches and even claws and tails of others. It was easiest to do while they slept, but he'd been successful in the past while they were awake too.
- - -
He didn't think he'd be leaving this life behind any time soon, it was what he knew, what he was good at. It was easy enough to find ample items to sell for profit, and he'd often make trips into town to sell the more valuable items to merchants and shop keepers. He knew the stalls to visit where they wouldn't ask as many questions concerning the origin of the items, some dragons wanted to sell items and others wanted items to sell. Supply and demand had kept food on his table and a roof over his head so far. He sighed; there really was no rest for the wicked. |
