Biography
Judith Scrivener is the second of her line to hold the post of Recorder in Attermire Scar. She took over on the death of her father, Orchid, having been his apprentice for all of her hatchling-hood. It is said that Orchid, never in the best of health, stayed alive by sheer stubborness and habit until Judith was old enough to take over.
She has continued to live in the convoluted, beautiful but strange lair she and her father built encrusting the ceiling of the Muniments Chamber. Made of glued parchment strips over wicker and lathe, it resembles nothing more than a sprawling wasps nest comprising several segmented chambers in a maze-like arrangement. As Orchid lay dying, he instructed Judith to embalm his body and entomb it in the central chamber of the lair. This she duly did, though many dragons find it bizarre for someone to be happy so close to her dead. But Judith understands the bond between Scrivener and Book, and refused to tear that bond from her father.
Strange and introverted, Judith nevertheless hopes for a son or daughter to apprentice themselves to the task of Recording. Every dragon who passes through the Guest House on the way to the Observatory is Recorded in Judith's Books, as is every hatching, mating, sundering, death and Change among the clan of Attermire. Once a year, copies of the Books are sent to the Observatory archives, a solemn duty and honour among the young dragons who are entrusted with the task.
